Bed jackets?

BorisJohnsonsHair · 20/11/2022 11:56

I'm so old I can remember these from my childhood 😂.

Is there a modern equivalent? Had a lie-in this morning and my arms were a bit chilly as I browsed Mumsnet read the Observer.

Obviously I could wear long-sleeved pyjamas but would be too hot during the night.

Any suggestions?

@Time40 just tried the dressing gown thing - genius!

I remember them as more cape-like and definitely floral and quilted.

As an alternative, put your arms in the sleeves of your dressing gown so the back is over your front: very cosy and effective.

Haha. Nothing like popping a straight jacket on in bed to keep you cosy Grin

@HumourReplacementTherapy I know! It does keep you cosy, though - someone upthread just said it was genius!

@BorisJohnsonsHair
How about a liberty bodice for daytime wear?

ladymalfoy45 · 24/11/2022 17:55

I have two. Bought for me when my DD was born so I'd be warm when breastfeeding. My favourite is the thick one with a hood and bear ears. Still wear it.

AuntieDolly · 24/11/2022 20:00

@Georgyporky with little rubber buttons you couldn't get undone in PE and ribbons down the front?

Glitterdandruff · 24/11/2022 20:25

I bought This flowery one for mum in laws Christmas present, hoping it’s perfect for cuppa & kindle reading in bed. She’s finding her dressing gown a bit fiddly & uncomfortable in bed and not yet an oodie convert like me 😁

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/11/2022 20:30

I don’t know but there’s a gap in the market that’s for sure

BambiBambi44 · 27/11/2022 06:17

Laura Ashley do them in Next - I’ve just ordered one for DM, who, inevitably, has everything but not a bed jacket. Looked fab on pics and very comfy.

whiteroseredrose · 27/11/2022 07:34

MN is telepathic!

I was wondering what to get my MIL for Christmas and was thinking of a bed jacket. I got my DGM one when she went into hospital and she loved it.

That one was from Debenhams in the 1990s. No idea where to get one now though.

whiteroseredrose · 27/11/2022 07:35

Right. Going to check the Next website

whiteroseredrose · 27/11/2022 07:48

Amazing. Just bought a silky blue one from the Debenhams website. It will probably match the heated throw that I bought her last year!

Whatsleftnow · 27/11/2022 16:56

I pop on my snoodie (primark’s rip off oodie) to make coffee and wear it back to bed.

MarcelEtCeleste · 27/11/2022 16:56

Ahh, my grandmother had a quilted bed jacket but she used to call it her house coat.

She bought me one when I went away to boarding school and, despite looking pretty old-fashioned, I wore it because it was a little reminder of her.

TheHateIsNotGood · 27/11/2022 17:12

I always remember them as being knitted/crocheted in thick strand wool. 3/4 length sleeves so you don't drop the ends in the marmalade on your breakfast tray.

BambiBambi44 · 27/11/2022 18:09

This is the one I ordered from Next - bargainous and looks cosy.
May get one for me too if it’s comfy 🙈

Ooooh I’ve only seen quilted ones but excellent point about 3/4 sleeves!

StillWeRise · 27/11/2022 23:30

a shawl is what you need OP

Mirabai · 28/11/2022 15:38

I have 2 navy ones from M&S. They’re warmer and more easily washable than a cardigan. I draw the line at old lady colours - mauve, pink and pale blue. Mine doesn’t scream bed jacket it just looks like a fleece with buttons.

kateandme · 28/11/2022 16:08

Oh this is reminding me of gran so much

hangsangwitch · 28/11/2022 16:18

I used to get these for my MIL, she loved em. Basically a cardigan in nightoe colours.

I think one of the key things is that they are not too long, they should be max waist length, so that you don't have extra fabric bunching up when sitting in bed. Some of the ones shown her are too long!
But to be honest, I just put on a cardi or a hoodie.

LadyEloise1 · 29/11/2022 17:52

I agree re the length @steppemum.
Some of the ones featured on this thread are too long.
Definitely waist length or slightly shorter.
It must have long sleeves. You can't be doing with getting your wrists cold !!!!

whiteroseredrose · 29/11/2022 21:01

This is the one I've bought for MIL

It matches the heated throw that I bought for her last Christmas!
