Did anyone else get the red cassette tapes and booklets sent, as a child?

I can't remember what they were called. You got a large plastic (red) 'briefcase' style box with a cassette tape that narrated a story and then I think once a month or fortnight another tape would be sent. Some were classics, I remember one being Jack and the Beanstalk. Others were stories I'd not heard of. I think I ended up with about three 'briefcases', and I remember wondering why two had a picture of a boy on the front and one a little girl. I got hours of amusement out of them.

I've just been reminded of this on the 'films you see differently as an adult' thread as 'The Little Match Girl' was mentioned, and that was one of the stories.

Memory unlocked from that thread (not a TAAT though)!
Glad someone else remembers them.

The tin soldiers one was brilliant, one had only one leg? I do remember that. And was there one about a little girl who was given a coin to wear around her neck?

Yes, Storyteller! They were expensive, from what I remember, so I could only have one as a very occasional treat. I listened to them over and over. One about a witch and her cat, Gobelina. It would ping when it was time to turn the page over.

I don't know why I am gratified by remembering things like this 😂I've googled and I don't recognise the magazines/booklets but then I guess I wouldn't from back in the 80s!

I can imagine they were expensive-it was my well-off Grandmother who got them for me, I doubt my parents would have been able to. I did love them though, and it probably helped me become a leisure-reader. :) I am trying to remember more of them now. Wonder where mine all went....

@caffelattetogo - Gobbelino the witch’s cat! I had the book.

Cherryana · 20/11/2022 00:44

I loved them so much. I had two copies and Goblina was my favourite story.

Namechangenumber23 · 20/11/2022 00:47

My friend collected them, the magazines in the official binders and the official carry cases for the cassettes. I'd have sold my Gran for them back then 😂

You're welcome! Though I do apologise for any inconvenience to your sleeping schedule!

I knew I'd seen that channel when I'd had a sudden recollection about them myself a while back. I'm so glad it's still going and wish it had been around when my DC was little!
Though my OH still had his read a long Star Wars cassettes and books.

I also have fond memories of the choose your own adventure series and the Usborne Puzzle solve it yourself series too. There was also a Fampus Five version launched which came with accessories to help solve and detect. Happy times!!

I don't recognise some of these either! But I went down a definite rabbit hole!

I loved these! We still have the set at DMs house although some of the books are a bit worse for wear these days

beccaskylar · 20/11/2022 04:05

I had something similar, but it was called "Once Upon A Time". Memory unlocked!
