I remember thinking this once as I sat through a small goddaughter’s school Christmas concert one year. Thirty beginner recorder players, as many again of inept tambourine bashers, half a dozen year 6 girls who all thought they were Hannah Montana, and virtually every single parent in the audience trying to film it for the ‘book. The years may be short but fuck me, some of the hours.

I think it’s because the days are so long that the years feel so short. They are far less than the sum of their parts. I seem to lurch from one weekend to the next and the weeks just get eaten up.

Oh god yes! I know one day we will all look back misty eyed through Rose tinted glasses etc on how short the years were when they were little and how much we should have cherished them...

but ducking hell how is it that the few hours before bedtime can seem so eternally unending. How can 24 short hours involve so many tantrums and how can 1 small child ask soooooo many questions before you've even sat down for breakfast.

This reminds me of the last verse of John Cooper Clarke's Evidently Chickentown:

The fucking pies are fucking old.
The fucking chips are fucking cold.
The fucking beer is fucking flat.
The fucking flat's got fucking rats.
The fucking clocks are fucking wrong.
The fucking days are fucking long.
It fucking gets you fucking down.
Evidently Chickentown.

Aw I hear you OP
is it a "clock watching at work, simultaneously boring and stressful" thing?
