Help me with my storage heater?!

Hi!
Finally given in and decided to turn the heating on. No idea how to work the storage heater.

I've lived in flats with storage heaters before. I'm not finding an input and output on this though. There's a vent on the side which I guess is a sort of manual output. There's a slider on the top with a bit of a weird landlord paint job going on. No idea what the slider is for our what each side indicates. An input? Don't know. I've turned it on at the wall and I guess I'm just going we aren't cold tomorrow. Any ideas?

There's no way I'd use a storage heater especially at the moment! When I had them I used convector heathers instead which were far more economical even factoring in the initial outlay of buying them. They were about £25 from Argos.

We are on an economy 7 and are not on the variable tariff so are lucky and can manage to afford it (We are skipping most of winter here and heading off to the inlaws to spend time with their fireplace though) I am going to buy a heater in the coming days but I'm freezing working from home at the minute 😬

Is there a manufacturer name and model number on it?

Can you tell I'm traumatised by the big bill we had ? 🤣

Mousespace · 17/11/2022 23:24

I am absolutely on top of the bill 😂 the smart meter won't let me forget.

I don't see any branding on the storage heater or I would have Googled the name :(

As you’ll know, storage heaters work by heating up overnight then slowly releasing their heat the next day. They’re packed with heavy, dense bricks which hold the heat.

There usually isn’t anything more than an on/off switch but I have seen some with a switch which acts to release the heat more quickly - bearing in mind they’ll be cold in a couple of hours.

I understand they’re meant to be used as background heat. Living rooms will probably need an additional heat source.

You may have an extra meter for your storage heaters as they’re usually charged at a lower rate than standard electricity.

Probably a great idea just now!

Well I've worken up after it being turned on at the wall all night and it's stone cold. Maybe it never worked.

Everything in this flat was "new" when we got here but we've already had to have the shower changed due to electrical fault and the electrician then said they'd used the cheapest everything. So I imagine they've cheaper out on the heating. For "all new" this radiator is pretty dinged up and has clearly been painted in places.

I guess I'm paying for that sweet argos same day delivery and carrying a wee space heater around. What's safest with a dog?!
Hopefully only here for this winter :/

We had the convector with a dog and it was fine, never any issues, she just used to curl up and doze off in front of it.
