husband and I are off to London to see a show next week (November) and are heading in early to have a look around. Any suggestions for free or cheap things to do?

Most of the museums and galleries are free.

Covent Garden for the atmosphere.

Borough market for the food.

Lots of free museums... British, Tate, Natural History, Science, V&A (plus loads more I've forgotten)

never been to V&A, heard it's really good

V & A jewellery bit is ace - so sparkly! And there are drawers you can open for more sparkly surprises.

Tate Britain is free and you can catch the Thames Clipper for a cheap boat ride (not that cheap but more public transport price than pleasure boat price). Get it to the Tate Modern if you're not galleried out and then you can have a little walk over Millennium Bridge to St Paul's, which is not free unless you attend a service.

Kings Cross area is also nice if it's dry. There's often live music by the canal, Coal Drops Yard is cool, there's a market there at weekends, plenty of places for coffee/ drinks.

The South Bank is also great, you could start east at Tower Bridge and work your way west via Borough Market and the Tate Modern, have early dinner then head into the West End for the show.
