Places to walk / things to do near Alton Towers

Anybody local or have any knowledge of where I could go for a decent walk/hike near to Alton Towers (whilst DC are at Alton Towers). Maybe a local village I could visit afterwards with cafes too? Or go for tea (dinner...) before picking them up? TIA

www.ramblersretreat.co.uk/ is a really nice cafe not far from Alton Towers. You can also walk Dimmingsdale from there. It has established walks.
You can drive into Uttoxeter which has a lot of shops, or Cheadle. Stoke isn't too far, but I'm not keen on it.

When are you going? Alton Towers itself has now closed for the winter.
