Wwyd - nightmare holiday home next to construction site

I've managed to get away from work & family obligations for a few days to finish writing my book.

I arrived to my sea view apartment yesterday to find that while one side had a sea view, the other faced onto a working construction site. I immediately complained & the host told booking.com there was no construction 'on site' as in at the property itself. Booking.com told me this and I then sent them video and photos of what I was dealing with.

They then insisted the host cooperate and this morning she offered to put me up in a different apartment. It has been 4 hours since I replied saying yes and it's due to get dark soon here. There are other properties nearby available and I don't want to be finding a new place in the dark as a woman. I am at the point where I'm thinking of buying somewhere else for 2 nights but I'll likely lose any compensation. Wwyd?

I would wait. You are annoyed but not in any danger, so nothing bad will happen if the move is delayed until the morning.

You can get back in touch with booking.com and ask them to chase.

Skinnermarink · 15/11/2022 14:54

Well you can wait surely? As you say it’ll be dark so any construction will wind down.

Skinnermarink · 15/11/2022 14:55

Where are you, is it somewhere particularly unsafe? Because most women can move around in the dark outside in winter or we’d never leave the house!

I suppose so. I'm just very annoyed and so burned out I was looking forward to this.

I've spent most of the day in the rain exploring the small town as I'd rather be doing that than in the house!

As it is I haven't got any writing done which is what I came here for. The drilling can even be heard through Bluetooth headphones.

This isnt really helpful. I'm in an out of the way location I'm not familiar with and could get lost in at night. I planned to get here in the daytime so I didn't have to worry about that.

If it was me I would ask for a refund and start again myself perhaps.

It happened to me once - it can happen, it is a PITA. Could you find a local cafe and write there for a couple of hours? They will stop once it is dark.

Skinnermarink · 15/11/2022 15:14

Well if it was me I’d be in a lovely local pub instead while I try and secure a refund. Did you see anywhere nice whilst exploring? It’s not what you expected but surely you can salvage something?

thinkfast · 15/11/2022 15:22

Booking.com should help you find somewhere else. Get back into them asap

It's sorted. Apparently the host who lives abroad refused to help so the go between who deals with the property face to face actually gave me her new flat which she plans to make into a holiday home soon.

It's a bit of a downgrade/very basic & nowhere near as comfy/cosy but at least I'm not next to a building site! She's already give me an extra night free of charge. I'm just glad I can relax now.
