Energy company taking this amount??

My bill is 178 this month. The energy company has taken 502 pounds on a budget plan I never signed up to. I am now in my overdraft and very very stressed. I have called and they won’t refund it and I don’t know what to do.

How do you usually pay your bill? Were you in debt to them before this bill?

MuchTooTired · 15/11/2022 13:48

If it happened today, call the bank and get them to recall the direct debit (they have to fill out a form) because it’s for a non agreed amount. The money will usually be back in your account late the same day or early tomorrow if it’s accepted, then once the money is back send a manual payment to the energy company.

I think it’s the direct debit guarantee - I’m not too sure on the rules about it, but I have had this happen to me and have had no problems having the amount recalled on the day with nationwide. I don’t know if they’ll do it after the same day, but I’d call the bank as your next call.

Good luck!

@Lockheart no debt. Usually pay for usage. So stressed about it.

@MuchTooTired I can’t do that as it’s been two days… thank you for the suggestion

I don’t think it’s limited to 1 day, give them a ring.

If you defintely did NOT sign up for a budget plan then call your bank as a matter of urgency.

Phone the bank and say you would like to recall the payment under the direct debit guarantee. It's pretty quick, money should be back within 24 hours

I've recalled DD's over a day later before with no problems, definitely call the bank OP.

Sorry op I have no advice as I'm clueless but this seems to be common now. How are companies getting away with raiding peoples banks like this?

dementedpixie · 15/11/2022 15:49

Definitely call your bank. They can get the money back under the direct debit guarantee as the company and you haven't agreed that amount in advance. They can't just take any old amount out your account.
