My secret fantasy is….

To be a housewife.

I want to live in a cottage in the country and spend my days reading my barefoot children, baking bread and keeping chickens. I’d be happy cleaning and cooking and child-reading. Reading classics but the fire in my alone time. Or sit in my little summerhouse when it rains under a blanket. I don’t want to think about politics, take any interest in money or wear bloody business wear.

Obviously I’d never say any of this out loud. And yes politics would affect my bread baking and chicken keeping. And if my husband left me I’d have no money bla bla bla. But in my secret fantasy none of that matters. Everything is Quiet and simple, the opposite of my current life.

(Whispers) same here! I have a successful career but this is still my secret dream... well without the chickens! I'd keep a cottage garden and bake sourdough using my ancient starter. Gin and tonic in the garden on balmy summer evenings and winter days spent baking cakes and reading books. Heaven!

To move back in to the house I grew up in. I’d decorated exactly how I wanted and knock down the horrendous conservatory the new owners stuck on the back. I’d grow lots of veggies in the big back garden and put my swing back up for my DC.
I’d make it a house of happy memories this time.

Yes exactly! I’d never say it out loud because I feel like we’re not allowed to want this any more and we have to be proud of being ‘boss women’ or whatever. But I want the country housewife life!!

Is this a possibility for you at all?

I am a housewife and all I do is cook, clean and take care of children. I feel trapped at times, it can be hard work and it's boring but it suits our situation. I do sometimes fantasise about living entirely alone as a recluse, although I'd never actually want that.
