Norethisterone - can I take it after period is due to stop it coming?

Wise women of mumsnet, I have a gynae appointment on Friday for which I’ve booked non-refundable train tickets, booked the day off work, etc. I deliberately booked it for a few days after my period would end.

However, despite being regular ( predictable to the day), Covid seems to have messed me up. I’m 3 days late which is unheard of and definitely not pregnant.

Google tells me norethisterone has to be started 3 days before my period is due. Has anyone taken it later than that or when you’re already late? Will it work?

He doesn’t do clinics in this location all the time so if I reschedule there’ll be a wait - and who knows if I’ll be regular enough to predict things any time soon. 😖

I’m irregular and take it either to stop my period (when it just doesn’t stop by itself) or to stop it from coming when I’m going on holiday. I never Track my periods, I just start taking it and it stops mine in a day or two, or prevents it starting. I always come on a few days after I stop taking it though :)

@BadTeethBoy Ooh that could work if I get it tomorrow then. Thank you!

Why do you need to postpone your period? What are you going to gynae for?

There’s rarely a restriction on bleeding, you can still be examined, scanned etc.

@Sidge It’s something I’ve had a few times and it’ll be very messy if I have my period. I mean, I could ask but I’m not sure I’d be comfortable with it in all honesty.

Ok as long as you’re not going for anything cycle-monitoring related you could start it tomorrow or Wednesday and it should stop you bleeding Friday.

Be aware though there are shortages of norethisterone and utovlan, and it might be unavailable…

Super. I’ll see if I can get my hands on some. Thanks!
