How long are 2nd class letters taking to arrive?

If I send a birthday card 2nd class tomorrow what do you reckon the chances are of it arriving by next Saturday? Too risky? I’ve got some old stamps to use up before Jan but don’t know if it’s pushing it too finely .

There is a postal strike Monday and was one on Saturday which will be causing delays. I wouldn't risk it because they will get posted after all the 1st class ones.

I posted a letter on Friday lunchtime second class, from the main sorting office in our town. Spoke to the recipient today and it had arrived yesterday. They live 250 miles away.

Oh I thought the strikes were at the end of the month now ofwarren. I’ll stick a first on it then.

The strikes yesterday and tomorrow were called off.

I am posting one second class tomorrow for next Monday and hoping it arrives, so I think you would be OK Op sending second class.

The next strikes are next week and the week after, just been looking as I have a few cards to send for early December.

Suboptimalsitch · 13/11/2022 21:34

Thanks BertiesShoes, I thought maybe I’d missed some updated info.

A card posted in east England in late afternoon 31st October, allowing a nice 3 days to get there, arrived in west Wales the very next day - 2nd class stamp, first class service!

I haven’t had such good luck. I posted a birthday card to a friend in the some city 2nd class and it took over a week to arrive. No strikes during the week either. I thought it was around three working days for second class

brighterthanthemoon · 14/11/2022 06:15

I would chance it

I appreciate the current postal strikes are irritating, and change things atm. But re 2nd class stamps generally I find that they arrive at exactly the same time, if not before! 1st class stamps, and have done for at least the last 3 years.

Postman I know says don't bother with first. They rarely bother to distinguish nowadays.

use583298 · 14/11/2022 07:52

I would send it, there are no strikes this week

i have a book of those old second class stamps and I will just send the few Christmas cards I have with them really early this year, I am a bit concerned that they might get nicked in the post so don't want to send any more back than necessary

I sent my mums 90th birthday card 18th September because her birthday was 23rd September she received on the 16th October, I was so angry it took so long , as it was a special birthday. I’ve lost all confidence in the Royal Mail . 😒
