I didn't realise only the new ones were in circulation now as I don't use cash but found an old handbag with some in and could really do without wasting it.

Take them to the bank - you might have to pay them into your account and withdraw the cash, but it will be fine

bloodywhitecat · 13/11/2022 21:07

You can take them to the bank to exchange them www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/exchanging-old-banknotes

Our local post office accepts out of date money and swaps it for new. - could try yours ?

steppemum · 13/11/2022 21:10

Banks are legally obliged to exchange all out of date notes. But they may not alwyas be abel to do it on the spot. (eg very old notes have to be verified)

gemgembob · 13/11/2022 21:13

Thanks so much I don't even know where the nearest bank is to me. Haven't used one in years.
We have a post office where I live so will have to try there but it's a small one.

Is there a limit to how much you can change? I’ve just found some old notes too. The post office website says £300 maximum over 2 years. Is it the same for banks?

Purplepurse · 14/12/2022 17:56

You can change more than £ 300 at the bank but they checked with me I was already a customer with them and I had to pay it into my account.

The Bank of England will send you the money but I don't think that applies to every branch. Best to check before making a special trip and afaik they don't exchange you have to pay them into your account

Within the last couple of years, I had a £20 note that had had a bite taken out of it by a fox (long story!). I tried a couple of banks, that I didn't have an account with, and the Post Office. None of them would change it for me. My own bank gave me a form to fill in and send to the Bank of England, listing the bank note numbers and explaining why I wanted a new note. Once sent, the BofE processed it and sent me a cheque within the week.
So, I would try your own branch first!

I put £6k of old £20 notes into the bank the other day (into my account) it was my 'money under the mattress' that's why I had so much old cash at home. It went in fine.

Did the bank not ask why you had so much ?

YolayCaprese · 14/12/2022 19:37

I think this happens a lot more than were led to believe as I found a load of money and took it in. I was worried they'd ask questions but just said to bring it in if I found anymore!

I didn’t find that much unfortunately, just over £300 left over holiday money. Did you have to fill in a form too or just pay in the usual way?

Shopaholic100 · 14/12/2022 19:55

@gemgembob did you manage to get yours changed?

underthemike · 14/12/2022 20:20

In answer to the questions.

I actually had about £14k Blush I paid it in over a few months into a machine in my local branch. I think there was a limit of 200 notes per transaction.

No issues. I think bank staff have seen it all before.

I don't look like someone who's minted or a drug-dealer (perhaps midway between the two!) and the money is legit and taxed, saved over years, but I was prepared to bullshit about selling a car or something, but no explanation required, even though I needed help using the machines.

underthemike · 14/12/2022 20:22

I did do a lot of £6k in one go at the end (I've got ADHD and I got bored going to the bank with more modest amounts Grin)
