Just seen this on Facebook, and thought it might help someone out

fb.watch/gN4V01Lmi1/

She makes soup by toasting flour, adds a knob of butter, stirs in milk and then adds salt & pepper. Brings it to the boil and adds more milk, or water to thin it, then serves.

She says its nice.

That's basically a white sauce, is it not?

Dotcheck · 13/11/2022 21:35

Surely it’s a base for other things? Broccoli and Blue cheese, roasted parsnip, leek and potatoes…..

I don't know, I try not to cook with flour.

Sounds like a recipe for seasoned wallpaper paste.

Clymene · 13/11/2022 21:40

You might as well just drink a glass of milk. There's not much more nutrition in adding some flour and a knob of butter

3beesinmybonnet · 13/11/2022 21:41

Agree with pps that's not soup it's a basic white sauce.

tealandteal · 13/11/2022 21:42

Ah yes, I made this today, added cheese and pasta to mine.

Phuton · 13/11/2022 21:44

To be fair, butter is worth more than gold bullion these days so not sure how cheap this white sauce can be sadly but with some cheese in (even MORE ££), pasta and cauliflower, it’ll be tasty!

TinFoilHatty · 13/11/2022 21:44

Very basic white sauce. I had mine yesterday with mushrooms and chopped smoked bacon and some nice crusty bread.

NatalieIsFreezing · 13/11/2022 21:44

That's white sauce.

OtterOnToast · 13/11/2022 21:53

Is this an anti poverty thing or a new tik tok chalkenge?

Chikapu · 13/11/2022 21:56

She says its nice
Well she would, wouldn't she? It sounds shit.

XenoBitch · 13/11/2022 21:59

That sounds like something I would use to stick wallpaper to the wall.

It is not nice, it is not nutritious.. it is just crap. Here is a recipe for us poor folk... basically gruel without the lumps.

XenoBitch · 13/11/2022 22:01

A proper CoL recipe would be something filling and cheap, but also nutritious. You can have a full belly but have malnutrition.

Cynderella · 13/11/2022 22:54

Yes, it's modern gruel.

When I was very poor, I did use cheese sauce with veg to fill plates and stomachs. And custard made with custard powder rather than eggs for the same purpose. But, obviously, with something more nutritious with it.

I do remember one of my kids saying, is it porridge or baked potatoes tonight, because it was the end of the month, and they'd noticed the signs. Nothing wrong with carbs to pad a meal, but it's grim to think that people think it's a meal.

CourtneeLuv · 14/11/2022 09:34

It's not gourmet, but if it tides someone over til they get food bank supplies or their kids don't go to bed hungry, then it's done its job.

That is actually a thing in Germany, Switzerland and Austria - amongst other countries, although the flour used might be rye or buckwheat and either water or stock instead of milk.

Clymene · 13/11/2022 21:40

Well it would add carbohydrates, additional vitamins, fibre and fats... Not exactly nothing?

Clymene · 14/11/2022 13:30

Not much fibre in white flour but I guess it will fill you up a little longer.

I'm not sure the additional calories will balance out the cost of turning on the gas for long enough to cook the flour out.

SallyWD · 14/11/2022 13:56

Yes, white sauce, not soup! The best thing about soup is how nutritious it is because of the veg you add. That's not nutritious at all.

OtterOnToast · 13/11/2022 21:53

Is this an anti poverty thing or a new tik tok chalkenge?

It's just a YouTuber who makes videos about weird and wonderful foods and recipes from history and different cultures - its not being touted as a nutritious solution to being hungry.
I love watching Emmymade's videos.
