Holiday booked tomorrow to Istanbul. Following what was very likely a terrorist attack today, should we go or not? We would lose approx £400 if we cancelled.
I am nervous.

The money is already spent, so it’s gone already. You are not loosing the money, but the holiday.

If you feel unsafe, don’t go.

I presume you have time off work, so can you find a cheap, last minute UK deal instead?

chipsandpeas · 13/11/2022 17:17

id do, if it was a terrorist attack security will be tightened up

Riverlee · 13/11/2022 17:18

Also, what does your insurance say? And is the holiday still going ahead? Check the flight details etc.

Afterfire · 13/11/2022 17:21

Extremely unlikely to be another one in the same area. I can understand you’re worried but I think I’d still go unless you can just move the break to somewhere else easily.

Ducksurprise · 13/11/2022 17:23

I'd also go, no where is immune but security will be very tight now.

Not covered under insurance and the flight is still going ahead.

It will be safer tomorrow than it was yesterday. I'd go.

istanbulhelp · 13/11/2022 17:44

I know I'd be nervous if we went

I'd definitely go, hugely unlikely to be another one immediately. This is probably the safest time to go!

Doowop1919 · 13/11/2022 18:47

I'd go but if you're going to be nervous and not enjoy it, then maybe it's not worth it?

Lesina · 13/11/2022 18:48

Go. They will need the support

NCcoziwannaNC · 13/11/2022 18:48

I wouldn't but im a worrier

MightyAtlantic · 13/11/2022 18:49

I wouldn't go but I am an anxious traveller.

808Kate1 · 13/11/2022 18:52

In the year or so after 9/11 so many people were nervous about flying, but at the time I felt it was the safest time to fly. Same principle here. But if you think you will feel uneasy when you're there, then possibly reconsider.

skilpadde · 13/11/2022 19:18

I travelled to Cairo the day after the Khan el-Khalili bombing. Our group had almost the whole plane to ourselves. There was immense security when we arrived, and it felt safe to us. And the locals were very glad to see tourists.

I would go. The increased security will make the risk very low. And even if the risk was the same as it was a few days ago (a risk level when you were prepared to travel), the chance of you being caught up in an incident is virtually nil.

katscamel · 13/11/2022 20:22

I'd go. You're likely to spend more time in Sultanahmet than Taksim where the attack took place and security will be pretty high.

I remember 20+ years ago going to Turkey for the first time a week or so after the PKK (same organisation this attack is being blamed on) had been putting bombs on the beaches.
There are places you can go can go on the usual sightseeing route that would be even less of a target.... Bosphorus Cruise, Princes Islands, etc
Have a great time

Hbh17 · 13/11/2022 20:26

Just go - it will be fine. And Istanbul is a wonderful city.
