Any recommendations for home testing hpv testing

ExH finally admitted years of infidelity with various women inc prostitutes. Late 50s and I don't have smears any more as I'm not sexually active and they are incredibly painful with my tilted cervix and post menopausal atrophy. Not had sex with ex for 10 years or anyone else. No symptoms

To put my mind at rest I want to home test for HPV. Just need recommendations

Why not book in for a smear test? No longer being sexually active isn't any protection, and the pain is only temporary

Last time I tried it was agony because of the above. Tried for 15 minutes and couldn't even see it. It's something I just can't face I'm afraid

There’s no point doing a smear test anyway, they don’t even check the cells they harvest anymore.

I hear Superdrug do HPV tests you can do at home, but maybe it’s worth getting a general STD check while your at it too? I think you can get at home swab tests you can do at home for that too, some STDs don’t have symptoms so it’s worth getting checked out.

I’m loathe to give you attention but can’t not challenge this.
THIS IS UNTRUE AND DANGEROUS
You know that quote about free speech and fire in a crowded theatre, that’s exactly what you’re doing

Have you been for a smear lately? They don’t check for cancerous cells anymore… They just check to see if your HPV positive, if your negative your cells that are harvested are then thrown away not even looked at.

You can get the HPV test at home from Superdrug. This is what I’m going to do from now on. Smear tests are not what they used to be… I don’t agree with it, but that’s the NHS for you🤷🏼‍♀️

@Chloefairydust
That’s angels on pinhead nonsense. You’re suggesting that smear tests don’t pick up HPV virus the marker for cervical cancer. That’s irresponsible to suggest.

bakewellbride · 13/11/2022 17:15

@Etinoxaurus my nurse at my GP surgery said that with the smear tests at their surgery they literally just check for hpv and it's that's negative they do absolutely nothing else. In fact they are looking to move to just home hpv tests soon for this reason. You can use capitals and claim it's dangerous all you like but facts are facts and the GP surgeries are literally saying they only test for HPV.

I'm massively pro smear tests and go for all of mine religiously so I can kind of see where you're coming from but the fact regarding what my nurse said to me remains.

Chloefairydust · 13/11/2022 17:42

No I’m saying smear tests only check for HPV, they don’t check for abnormal cells like they used to. So in that case might as well just get the HPV test from Superdrug…

I literally had a letter this week and have an appointment tomorrow at the hospital due to having abnormal cells found in my smear test.

theclockticksslowly · 13/11/2022 22:29

The last letter I received from my doctors surgery (and a friend who’s with another surgery had the same content within a letter) said that they do the test - getting the cells etc but the check for abnormal cells ONLY takes place if the check for the hpv comes back positive.

Chloefairydust · 13/11/2022 23:24

Yeah when I had my result it just said I was HPV negative so my cells didn’t need to be checked … It annoys me because I find smear tests painful, and to go through that discomfort for no reason (as I already know I’m HPV negative, been vaccinated) is just beyond irritating . Also they could have checked HPV with a basic vaginal swab test, why scrape cells off my cervix without a fucking good reason 😩… I feel like women’s health care in the NHS isn’t the best tbh🙃
