Charity shop find

Found this bag in our local charity shop. Does anyone have similar that could tell me if it was a good buy? Turquoise and rust coloured silk inside. It is like new and cost £8.50 which is a lot more than I’d usually spend in a charity shop. It is lovely.

It’s from Jim Thompson House in Bangkok. One of my favourite places, it’s a great find. Have a google to read about him and the house.

There's one for sale on Etsy for £57 so yours seems a bargain!

If this is it, they aren’t cheap,

It looks lovely

Jim Thompson originals are usually very expensive. Enjoy it, it is real silk.

Not my thing, it’s a bit 90s Paris Hilton, but is you love it that’s all that matters.

Jim Thompson was a silk merchant in Asia. He lived in Bangkok and there is a beautiful old teak house you can visit there. They have a gift shop that is quite pricey for Thailand. Very good quality silk. You have a lovely find there.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 12/11/2022 21:02

I don’t know whether it was a good buy but the brand namesake disappeared mysteriously. He was a silk guy. So I assume it’s in relation to that.

Similar bag for sale in their shop for £115 (4900THB)

surreygirl1987 · 12/11/2022 21:10

Surely you can just Google the name on it?

Fushia123 · 12/11/2022 21:52

Thanks everyone. I bought it for my daughter. She likes bags this style but is also very much into recycled clothes and other stuff. She is abroad this year so it’s going to be posted to her for her birthday. Nice and light too!
Thanks for your responses.

Not that I want to put a dampener on it, but is it definitely genuine? It's just that the font on the brand 'plate' thing doesn't look the same as the ones online. Doesn't mean it's not a good find. My daughter recently bought a lovely bag for £1 in a charity shop and when I looked up the brand, I briefly thought she'd had a huge bargain because they're £315 new! But I noticed the font was slightly different and it was made in Spain, rather than Bulgaria, which is where the real ones are made. It's still a good quality bag though - heavy, not lightweight like the plasticy bags you get from places like SheIn. The lining is lovely and beautifully finished. So hers is fake, but a nice fake. Yours may be the same.

Fushia123 · 12/11/2022 22:34

Yep. Good point. I don’t know enough about them but you are right. It could be fake but I don’t think she will mind.

If you've not heard of the brand (and I haven't either) it doesn't really matter if it's a 'fake' either way (thought I can't imagine it is, it's an acquired taste I think!) if you think she'll like it then £8 is no money for a gift and you've got a bargain. It seems like there are a few floating around online for £50 or more but that doesn't mean much unless you are looking at actual sold prices.

I hadn't realised it had tiny elephants on it until zooming in, it's not for me but the print is charming and the shape is having its moment again. I hope she likes it OP, sounds like she will and it's lovely to know the bag will get a second go and some use.

No, I doubt she will mind - my daughter loves hers. Jim Thompson meant nothing to me, nor did the brand of my daughter's. If she likes it, she likes it - that's all that matters.

It's lovely, op. I love elephants Smile
