Yankydoodledandy · 11/11/2022 23:45

I like it, it gets better as it goes on.

I'm feeling the same thing. I'm finding it boring. I've watched the first one and I think I'm going to abandon it.

Notsympatheticenough · 18/11/2022 12:54

I remember this period all too well. All sorts of stuff was happening with the Royal Family - and I'm not even that interested in them and it was gobsmacking.

I find it hard to believe that they've somehow made it a bit dull. It wasn't. And with the revelations that have come out in the 20 years since...I don't quite know how it's not more interesting.

wildthingsinthenight · 18/11/2022 13:00

Agreed.
I've watched it all and was disappointed. Was so looking forward to it.
There is a lot of miscasting IMO. Including The Queen, Prince Philip Charles and Anne.
Elisabeth Debicki as Diana is great though.

LowbrowVictoriana · 18/11/2022 14:10

This is disappointing to read. DH and I have been looking forward to watching this and were going to start tonight!

I guess we'll give it a go nonetheless.

Southlandssue · 18/11/2022 15:26

Sooooooo boring, I saw it through to the end but very disappointed

DowntonCrabby · 18/11/2022 15:28

I agree but am only just getting into e.3 so hoping it warms up.

luckylavender · 18/11/2022 15:31

It's not great. Seasons 1 & 2 were best. Some of it is just irrelevant.

superdupernova · 18/11/2022 15:38

I'm not that into this season either. The casting isn't great. I have to keep reminding myself that Charles is Charles and Anne is Anne etc. Camilla seems to be the only one that I look at and instantly know who it is. The casting just seems a bit off. The story lines feel very slow and uneventful. Diana is actually annoying me and I have little sympathy for her (probably not helped by the young Diana from before setting an annoying tone). I'll watch the season and hope it gets better but I doubt I'll ever rewatch it, though I'd happily rewatch the others.

Yankydoodledandy · 18/11/2022 18:48

UPDATE
Well just finished The Crown. How strange how it ended. I was bored towards the end.

I had to double check I had watched all 10 episodes 🤷‍♀️

This season was terrible. I did enjoy the Sydney Johnson episode. Didn't know anything about him, so I learned something new.

Wishawisha · 18/11/2022 18:53

I thought the same about seasons 3 and 4 but then on a re-watch I warmed to the new actors although I still don’t like how season 3 starts with Olivia Coleman reflecting on the fact that she’s now older.

With season 5 I didn’t like Anne to start with, but by the end I think it was actually good casting. Charles I just can’t believe and he barely sounds like Charles at all. Queen Mother is in it so little I don’t know why they couldn’t just cast someone who looks a bit like her..?

I think the Diana being annoying and the Charles being harshly done by is on purpose

They want us to be sympathetic to Charles clearly

OneTonNoodles · 18/11/2022 18:57

They should have cast Harry Enfield from The Windsors as Charles 😁

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 18/11/2022 18:59

I agree. I think the Charles and Diana stuff is all a bit boring, we have heard it all before, I'm sick of it all. It was at its best in the first two seasons.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 18/11/2022 18:59

I agree, terrible. Enjoyed the Mohamed Al-Fayed episode but the rest was appalling. Charles was so badly miscast; Camilla was the only good character really. I lived through it - as I’m sure many of us did - and it was far more dramatic IRL!

OMG me too! Actually I made it through episode 2. I'm hardcore. 🤣

YANBU OP, it's just gone off the boil. I think it doesn't help that it seems to be mostly about Imaginary Charles this season who is a 2D character based on Charles, and none of the stuff that actually matters has been covered. That Tampongate was gross and IDK why they bothered, it added nothing to the episode. It was Chekhov's Tampax.

Testina · 18/11/2022 19:02

I’m 6 episodes down and it feels like a chore 😕
What I liked until now was how the family story was mixed with contemporaneous current affairs, and domestic and world politics. Now it’s just soap opera style focus mostly just on those few people. And not even in an interesting way.
If this was Series 1, I’d never have finished it and started Series 2.

VollywoodHampires · 18/11/2022 19:07

Loved Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, however Jonathan Pryce is terrible casting.

Bagzzz · 18/11/2022 19:07

How much is it actually about the Queen? I watched episode 1 and she didn’t seem to feature much. Does it change in the next 9?

gahwhyme · 18/11/2022 19:08

Same. It's a bit weird this time round. All the toing and froing from one era to the next is getting in my nerves. I also don't particularly like the casting.

It's definitely lost it's sparkle for me.

DoubleGauze · 18/11/2022 19:08

I enjoyed it , but it did feel less like a well done period drama. Perhaps thats because it's a period that we all lived through though. It's easier to accept that they were depicting the 1950s properly if you weren't there!

The casting of the queen mother was odd. The Queen and Mohammed Fayed were my favourite choices. I think Fayed stole the show if I'm honest. His episodes were definitely the best.

I did think the ending was odd too. It seemed abrupt.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 18/11/2022 19:09

Have watched it all now and found it really disappointing.

  • The portrayal of the family who we can’t mention because MN auto-bins the posts (PP’s special friend) - really murky ethically imo
  • Diana’s constant doe-eyed sideways looks
  • Mis-casting left and right
  • The constant overarching metaphors as though we’re in GCSE English. Yes both the yacht and the RF are expensive old and creaky. Well done, have a biscuit.
  • Odd focus of episodes, with the effect that real life is more interesting than the same period shown on screen.
