When did those mad foil Garland Christmas decorations disappear?

I've been out of the UK for years and always missed being able to buy those unfoldy foil garland type decorations that we had when I was a kid. This is the first time in many years I'm here in autumn/winter, but I haven't seen any, not even in the pound shops. When did it all go so tasteful?

I saw them in The Range, Wilko's and a supermarket this week. They're still widely available.

CuriousCatfish · 11/11/2022 18:35

Good old Wilkos.

I think they're making a comeback!
I saw them in a few places last year, possibly Poundstretcher and Home bargains.

Propertyporn · 11/11/2022 18:35

We had these too!

I'm tempted to get some this Christmas because I loved them as a child. I spent hours just gazing at the Christmas lights being reflected in them.

NukaColaQuantum · 11/11/2022 18:37

I have some that my Gran had since I was a small child, she gave them to me because she can’t be bothered to put them up any more, they go in my bedroom every year, I fucking love them.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 11/11/2022 18:39

I saw them in Asda yesterday! Definitely making a comeback!

JennyJungle · 11/11/2022 18:43

I loved them as a child but they are so tacky I’d never have them now 😂

JennyJungle · 11/11/2022 18:43

Same with tinsel.

EndlessMagpies · 11/11/2022 18:46

They don't make tinsel like they used to. It's far too fat and fluffy these days, and the smell is all wrong.

CuriousCatfish · 11/11/2022 18:47

I love tinsel. I do like all things tacky though.

Thesearmsofmine · 11/11/2022 18:49

We got some a couple of years ago for nostalgia and the dc love them. Tacky as anything but tasteful Christmas decorations are bland anyway! Asda is where we found ours,

Swissnotswiss · 11/11/2022 18:49

We always have tinsel! I didn't even realise it had gone out of fashion.

Cherrysherbet · 11/11/2022 18:51

We always have them! It’s not Christmas until the hanging decs are up!

hesbeingabitofadick · 11/11/2022 18:52

I thought my Auntie had bought them all. BlushGrin

Milesty1 · 11/11/2022 18:53

They’re coming back! I’d say they went away in the 00s but definitely coming back - try eBay if you want really retro ones 😊

CuriousCatfish · 11/11/2022 18:54

Who wants a tasteful Christmas? Bring on the tacky!

astronewt · 11/11/2022 18:54

My dad used to string these allllllll over. We had a massive foil "chandelier" he'd hang up!

I have no time for a tasteful Christmas anyway. Christmas is about loads of sparkly things being reflected off shiny things.

DuncanBiscuits · 11/11/2022 18:54

My auntie had massive ones from a pub!

I long for some Cinderella carriage lights…

christmasbaublesandtinseltits · 11/11/2022 18:55

I bought these! God they take me back. I haven't tried them yet but I bet they're a million times brighter than they used to be.
I'm definitely tempted to get those other decorations from Wilko too! Love a bit of Christmas tack!

mrsed1987 · 11/11/2022 18:56

We have got some from wilko the last few years, I really like them it does remind me of my childhood.

I feel the same way about those crinkly foil spirals that used to hang from ceiling at school Christmas party
Also love the “indent” decorations made of shiny glass and proper lead lametta! Very vintage that grandparents had.
heavy and beautiful .

Oh my goodness, we had those too. I bet they're a fortune on eBay now!
