The Hobbit- Three films?!

My 6 year old and I have nearly finished The Hobbit book and I finally appreciate the love for Tolkien.

I've actually never seen the Hobbit film and thought DS and I could watch together. I discovered there are 3 films and it may not be suitable for a 6 yo. I'm annoyed firstly because the Hobbit was written for kids and secondly why 3 films?! It's not a big novel.

Long story (and rant) short: would you let a nearly 7 year old see these films? He seems fairly unphased by Smaug in the book

Because there are lots of adults who love the Hobbit. It's definitely not suitable for a 6 year old.

I don't think suitable for a 6 year old, sorry

They spread it over 3 films because money!

The 1st is a 12A rating. There is violence, an implied beheading with a the severed head shown tossed across a battlefield, for example, other battle scenes.
Watch it first alone to judge if your child could cope.

The three film thing is a money making thing imo. The makers know there is a huge Middle Earth fan base of adults, which answers your question about a children's book made into a adults film.

The book has scenes way worse than the movies.

No babies get eaten in the movies but in the Goblin caves there is a movie scene where Gollum kills and drags off a goblin that may be upsetting to a young child as well as the deaths of Filli, Killi and Thorin which are semi graphic.

First 2 movies are otherwise fine I think, but part 3 is all action and peril.

MrsTimRiggins · 11/11/2022 10:53

no because the films are shit and an insult to the book <helpful>

NotDavidTennant · 11/11/2022 10:55

why 3 films?!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Teleporno · 11/11/2022 10:59

My thoughts as well @NotDavidTennant I understand the reason for 3 LoTR films but not for the Hobbit!
