Help! Can you save my son's birthday?!!

Agh, need some hivemind input desperately. Son is nearly 12 and mad about planes. This weekend I had booked a hotel nr Newquay for the family to visit the plane museum at Newquay airport. Son very excited. Went online just now and the museum has now closed down. What on earth can we do near Newquay on a Sunday in November that is suitable. Cannot believe the place has sodding closed since I last looked.

Bumping - hope someone local can give you some inspiration!

Inauthentic · 11/11/2022 10:45

If there is nothing exciting for him there apart from the museum then it might not be worth going.
Would it be worth contacting the hotel to explain the situation and ask for the refund is possible?
Can you quickly book something else if you can afford?

givemushypeasachance · 11/11/2022 10:46

Cornwall is sadly pretty quiet this time of year and doesn't have a lot of plane-based activities. I don't know if this could even be booked at short notice, but could you stretch to a short flight in a Cessna? www.bodminairfield.com/flight-experiences/

givemushypeasachance · 11/11/2022 10:47

If you decide to go somewhere else, I don't know where you're based but this in Bristol is good aerospacebristol.org/.

PumpkinBooBoo · 11/11/2022 10:47

Again, would there be any chance of a hotel
refund? Where are you ordinarily based as there is Cosford Museum in the midlands which is an amazing shout for the plane enthusiast!

ikeawardrobe · 11/11/2022 10:47

Not planes but any gliding places nearby by that you could book a flight?

passport123 · 11/11/2022 10:47

Does he like gocarting? The st Eval circuit in Newquay is fun

givemushypeasachance · 11/11/2022 10:49

Or this in Somerset, my dad loves it www.nmrn.org.uk/visit-us/fleet-air-arm-museum

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/11/2022 10:50

Second the Fleet Air Arm. Not a plane enthusiast at all but I really enjoyed it, as did the kids.

BobbyBobbyBobby · 11/11/2022 10:50

He might be too young but could you hire a small plane to take him up for a short sight seeing flight?

littlemissminor · 11/11/2022 10:53

If you can move your hotel, there is the Fleet Air Museum in Somerset, Aerospace in Bristol where Concorde is kept, or the Helicopter Museum in Weston Super Mare - could even do both Aerospace and the Helicopter Museum, less than an hour apart

Choconut · 11/11/2022 11:04

Where are you travelling from to get to Newquay? Could you stop off at one on the places mentioned by pp's on the way there or back?

AudTheDeepMinded · 11/11/2022 11:04

Thanks all. Hotel is noon-refundable (cheapest rate). We live in Devon and have done Fleet Air arm a few times, also Cosford a couple of times. Go-carting is a good shout, will investigate. Would LOVE to get him up in a cesna but cannot stretch to that, and I think notice is a bit short.

RAF Davidstow museum?

AudTheDeepMinded · 11/11/2022 11:10

We did Davidstow earlier in the year, and had missed Newquay on that trip as we had gone a day it was shut (who closes on a Saturday!!). Huge disappointment, which is why I thought we could go for his birthday. Cannot believe it has shut down.

Although not a museum are there any airfields close he could do a bit of plane spotting at?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 11/11/2022 11:16

An outing in a glider? Can you message your local gliding club?

gettingolderbutcooler · 11/11/2022 11:18

Book a helicopter flight?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 11/11/2022 11:18

Organising a viewing of Top Gun 2 on a big screen at home?

Theunamedcat · 11/11/2022 11:21

Can you get near an airport? We spent a fantastic rainy day at a park by Birmingham Airport watching the planes take off and land the kids loved it and it was really close

PumpkinBooBoo · 11/11/2022 11:22

Perranporth Airfield looks like it has a cafe a few RAF bits there! Even if it's just an explore would it suit him?

ThreeB · 11/11/2022 11:24

Drive around the roads that surround the RAF base? The RAF may not be flying but there's lots of clubs etc that use the base and you may get lucky and see some take offs
