Statins - did taking them change your weight?

Did you find you were hungrier and gained weight? Or did they help you to lose weight?

Thanks

Studies have shown they cause weight gain in some only because, instead of making dietary changes to reduce lipids, people perceive that they don’t need to make changes now they are on a statin so don’t bother following healthy recommendations, so their diet may get a little worse if anything, hence the weight gain.

Those that have had a bit of a wake up call due to needing statins, so they do change their diet, will reduce their weight.

Do you think it's easier to lose it being on them @MeOlBamBoo, as in it helps metabolism, or it's just the wake up call that focuses the mind?! Thanks for the reply

That's interesting, can you link to the studies?

Only because I have to take them even though my cholesterol being well within the advised range due to being high risk from a medical condition. I have to have a very good diet due to said medical condition but still gained weight when I started taking them. My doctor told me it was very common.

I see lots of people who gain weight year on year regardless of all advice given to them (diabetic, hypertensive or high cholesterol patients) because they do nothing different except take the tablets. They will say ‘but it’s been Easter, and it was my birthday then X’s birthday and then we’ve had a holiday…’.
There are then some amazing people who proudly say ‘well I didn’t want to be taking tablets for life so I’ve changed my diet, started exercising ….’ their results are great and it’s down to lifestyle changes.

There are several studies if you Google Fleurty.

I have been taking statins for a year due to a mild heart attack a year ago. I was slightly overweight before (size 14 / 5.6') but have definitely put on weight this year. I am now at least a stone heavier and size 16. I am 49 though and going through Meno, so that might be playing a part

I do need to get hold of my diet and eat less sugar, but although I snack too much, my diet hasn't got worse in the past year - maybe slightly better - but I have deffo gained weight.

Thank you for that info @BobDear and @MeOlBamBoo
