Quick question about sending a scheduled email

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 09/11/2022 00:04

I want to send an email tonight to my boss as a scheduled email so he receives it in the morning. If I do this will it be time stamped as being sent today or will it time stamp it for being the time I have scheduled it as?

Why can't you just send it tonight and he'll see it tomorrow?
The worst I'd get in that scenario was being told to make sure I switch off and that work/, live balance is important, most likely they'd just reply tomorrow

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 09/11/2022 00:07

Sorry, for context, I am not feeling well and want to turn off my alarm for the morning but I want it to look like I have sent the message in the morning. I know I won't be feeling any better but don't want to set the alarm to wake up when I want to sleep it off.

I could do but it's a bit frowned upon where I work. I've done it before and it's been picked up. I've got a migraine and want to go to bed and sleep it off.

If you are sending it from your personal email address I'm pretty certain it will just pop in your bosses inbox tomorrow morning on schedule send.

AlexaWhatsMyUsername · 09/11/2022 00:11

It will be time stamped with the time you schedule it to send.

glamourousindierockandroll · 09/11/2022 00:12

I think it shows as being sent at the scheduled time.

@RewildingAmbridge i have to disgaree with you there. Email can be really intrusive and can become a bit of a virtue signally thing as well. My previous boss used to love a 5am email. As much as workplaces tend to overtly discourage out of hours emailing, I've got more respect for those who are actually courteous enough to schedule an email if they're choosing to work late.

Poppins2016 · 09/11/2022 00:14

Can you try sending a test email to either yourself or someone else (set to 00.15 for example)?

AlexaWhatsMyUsername · 09/11/2022 00:14

You can send yourself an email scheduled to send in ten mins time so you can see it work as you want it to when it comes into your in box.

Then schedule the work one and go to sleep.

Get well soon

CrapBucket · 09/11/2022 00:15

Get well soon. With mine, on Outlook, it just shows the time it was sent. However it won't send when the laptop is off (sorry if that sounds obvious) so you need to leave it on overnight if you're gonna be asleep.

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 09/11/2022 00:16

Thank you for your replies, I'm so fuzzy headed and can't figure it out. The only options in my work webmail are to send now or 8am. There's probably more options but I'm not in a frame of mind to look. Sorry. So, from what you are saying, if I send it now at time scheduled for 8am it should look like I've sent it at 8am? That's what I am hoping for.

Why can't you just send an email now saying you're emailing at this late hour to let them know you've got a migraine and need to sleep it off so won't be working in the morning?

Because I've done that before and got told off by my line manager because he said I might have felt better in the morning. I know I won't. I've taken migraleve and it hasn't touched it.

I’m pretty sure in Outlook it will show the time from tonight even if it actually delivers tomorrow morning.
Write the email to send tonight, explain you are not well, if you feel better you will get up in the morning and be in touch then, but that if they don’t hear from you in the morning it’s because you are too unwell.
If I was your manager I’d rather you slept!

LemonSwan · 09/11/2022 00:48

Gosh outlook is shite if that’s true. The whole point of schedule send is that it doesn’t send until it’s scheduled.

Get well soon OP

Send the email but say if you feel better in the morning and can work you'll let them know?

No I do this all the time - it will show the time it actually sends, not when you wrote it.

In Outlook client it will only send when Outlook is open (so won't send at all if you've closed Outlook or laptop, annoyingly!)

In the web version it will send regardless of whether Outlook is open or not.

I'm not sure it's a great idea to do it in this case though, you want to be certain that email has been sent & received.

greeandorange · 09/11/2022 05:54

Hope you feel better, id be scheduling interviews to work for companies that have understanding bosses.

StrawberryPot · 09/11/2022 06:06

Send the email but say if you feel better in the morning and can work you'll let them know?

^^ This

And make an appointment with your GP to get something stronger than Migraleve for future attacks. I take Sumatriptan (which you can buy over the counter too but it's quite expensive).

Blogdog · 09/11/2022 06:13

I wrote an email last week at 8:20pm and scheduled it to send at 9am next morning. It’s showing in my sent items as having been sent at 8:20pm ie when I write it. No idea what the time stamp in the recipient’s inbox was though. This was on outlook.

CrapBucket · 09/11/2022 22:22

OP I hope you are starting to feel better. If you haven't tried it, I suggest getting your ear pierced in the migraine spot, it really helped me. If it doesn't work you will have wasted £15 but apart from that you have nothing to loose by trying it.

MargaretThursday · 09/11/2022 22:46

When I send them (outlook online) it says the time sent. I know because someone commented on how I always seemed to manage to send the weekly update at exactly 8am. 🤣
