We're staying in Watford for one night. Where's a lovely place to spend the evening not too far away? We don't know that area at all... St Albans?

Yes, St Albans, or Amersham, or a drink at The Grove

What do you want to spend the evening doing? What’s your budget?

St Albans has an arts cinema (The Odessey), tonnes of quaint pubs, lots of nice restaurants. Pubs: Hare & Hounds, White Lion. Restaurants: loads of choice, could recommend somewhere if you say what you like?

Watford town centre actually has some decent restaurants, although it’s much less pretty than St Albans. L’Artista for decent Italian, Cote for French, The Florist for funky.

If you want posh, then Sopwell House or St Michael’s Manor in St Albans. Or The Grove just outside Watford.

Thank you both.

Somewhere pretty to walk around, a lovely quaint pub or restaurant would be ideal. We love all sorts of foods but really want to enjoy our meal in a lovely space. We need vegetarian options.

Definitely St Albans then. Have a look at the two pubs I suggested, or restaurants could be Thai Square, the Ivy Brasserie, Lussmans, Tabure for Turkish. Also lots of other chains like Bill’s or Cote. For expensive, Thompsons. For grown up wine bar with fancy cheese platters, The Bishop’s Cafe on Holywell Hill. Not very big and gets busy.

Have a wander near the clock tower, and around the Abbey. Maybe down Fishpool St and St Michael’s St. Are you going quite soon? It’s a fairly small place to be wandering around in the dark as I wouldn’t go round Verulamium Park, one of the obvious places for a wander, in the dark. If you’re going in the spring/summer then definitely do!

My St Albans recommendations:
Tabure is an upmarket Turkish restaurant with good vegetarian options
Per Tutti is very reasonable Italian with a nice vibe

If you are looking to spend more, The Grove is a lovely place to spend the evening and the buffet in the Glasshouse - although it sounds dodgy - is a great occasion.
