He has died at the age of 98. One of those people whom just seemed to go on and on. Rather like the Queen. A fine ding dong innings.

Although I was sorry to hear this I could've sworn he'd passed away a few years ago! Hell of an innings, used to love him in the Carry On films. He was introduced to a teacher whose name was Miss Bell in one of them - "ding DONG"

I thought that too, but I wonder if I was confusing him with Nicolas Parsons...

Aww, bless him.. :-(

98 is a great age. I was astonished to hear on the lunchtime news on Radio 4 that he grew up in a poor family in the East End, so the accent he used to such great effect all through his acting career was not his original one. RIP.

I thought he’d already died too. That’s sad. I hate the expression ‘innings’ for someone’s time on this earth though. He had a good long life.
