Baby head too small at six week check?

My sister took my neice for the 6 week check yesterday, all perfect except for one thing....the GP did all the measurements for the charts and said that while everything else (weight, height etc) was on track, the babies head had not grown on the trajectory expected and was smaller than it should be.

She did not refer to paediatrician or specialist, but asked her to come back in two weeks to measure it again. She said not to worry about it, but of course my sister is very very worried about it.

The baby was small (6lbs) at birth and compact, but feeds well, is very alert, can hear and see fine and seems like a perfectly normal baby to all.

Has anyone experience of this and can advise? Do some babies just have small heads or is this an indication of a problem?

TIA

My DS had the opposite problem - head was too big. We were told that head size is usually genetic, and as we used a donor there wasn't someone to compare head sizes with! Do either of your niece's parents have small heads?

We had multiple appointments where it was monitored and all that seemed to check was whether developmentally things were progressing as normal. This was initially with the GP and then at the hospital. Eventually I asked what the next step would be if they were concerned and they said an ultrasound to see if there was any swelling in the brain, so we got that done and as it was all clear he was discharged. He still has an unusually large head.

Also, I think head size is notoriously hard to measure consistently. Once we were discharged from the hospital the health visitor was supposed to continue monitoring, and on one visit to the clinic 3 different HVs recorded 3 different results. Gave up after that!
