I think I am a little bit in love with Ian Hislop

I mean, fearlessly slaying BS for Britain since forever, or what!
No one's too scary, too rich, too big or too pompous for Ian. He has encyclopaedic recall and is quicker and wittier than anybody. (His cute little shaky-shoulders laugh!)

Not an obvious crush, maybe, but when watching IHGNFY of a wintry night, next to a more classically handsome and averagely entertaining DH, I catch myself musing about what could clearly never have been. Reminiscing about being young and dismissing a lovely chap or two because their looks were a little unusual. My loss, probably. It's not always the obvious ones. Somebody knew the decent, intelligent thing to do and married him - Victoria Hislop - the clever clogs! Can she ever be bored? Surely not?

So Ian Hislop: the (moderately, in my case) Thinking Woman's Crumpet?

Can you think of people that - with hindsight - you wished you'd given more of a chance?

Disclaimer(s): I have never met Ian Hislop in RL. But I wish I had. DH and I are doing fine. I am no great catch myself.

In summary, Dara is much more my type 😀

Oh me too. I love his googly/bulgy Marty 'What hump?' Feldman eyes Grin.

Although I've been very sad and disappointed about how craven all of these clever men have been on the matter of gender identity. You know they understand material reality and most of them have grown up alongside feminists - they haven't got the guts though, and that's bollocks really.

GingerPCatt · 08/11/2022 19:59

He’s a regular in my fantasy pub. I think he’d be really interesting to chat to.

MarshaMelrose · 08/11/2022 20:45

I think he is actually a co-owner of Private Eye so really he is partly paying himself/covering his own costs.

It's a limited company but has shareholders, of which Hislop is one of several. He gets paid by the company and the company pays his lawsuits. The shares were bought at low value, hence the shareholders liability is very limited.

Don't really watch it nowadays but I did enjoy the thorough monstering he bestowed upon that hypocritical little shit Gary Neville recently 🤣🤣🤣

Me also!

Tisfortired · 08/11/2022 20:59

My OH looks like a young Ian Hislop. Cracks me up everytime I see him.

I suppose that must mean I inadvertently have a Hislop thing too!

He’s got lovely eyes and a great smile. I love the way he giggles.

scrivette · 09/11/2022 00:05

I have had a bit of a thing for him since I was about 18, it's the way he laughs/smiles. I thought I was the only one!

He is a regular in our local pub and is lovely and down to earth, knows the locals, props up the bar and chats to everyone etc

Loving the IH Appreciation thread! ❤

Isn't it lovely, all the love for Ian?
After reading how decent and sane he seems in RL, I'm even more in owe than when the thread started. 💖

I think what you mean is that in an LLC, a shareholder's personal liability is limited to a fixed sum which is generally the amount they have invested in the company. So someone suing can only claim agains the assets of the company, which would include the value of their shares, but not the personal assets of the shareholders, beyond that. But it's interesting that you know the number and value of his shares, @MarshaMelrose , since that doesn't seem to be widely available information.

We were at a dinner party with them once. He and Victoria were both lovely (I have also really enjoyed her books). I did not ask him about the value of his shares.

RoseAndGeranium · 09/11/2022 20:26

I adore him. I hope he sees this thread and enjoys all the mumsnet love.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/11/2022 20:32

I went to the first night of 'spike' last night at Richmond theatre(about spike Milligan. (Really excellent) Ian Hislop and Nick Newman are the writers and they did a lovely Q and A after the play. Very charming guys (Ian looks older though in the flesh ) his writing partner is a very good looking older guy in the flesh!!

Crikeyalmighty · 09/11/2022 20:37

@Blossomtoes Ooh me too- but I think he's a lucky man as well-

He might very well be nice I don't know, I've never met him. He hasn't harmed me and I wish him no harm in return. But I don't think he's funny and I don't think he's brave.

Personally, I would never be so rude as to bring up share worth at a dinner party with someone I didn't know. I guess you felt the same. So, like you say, you don't know.

1000umbrellas · 09/11/2022 21:00

Mmmm, see if you can find the HIGNFY with Paula Yates from the 90s if you want to be cured of your crush. All the blokes so creepy and patronising. Ugly scene.

GemLettuce · 10/11/2022 06:57

The Paula Yates episode came to my mind too. Unedifying.

But none of us is perfect, I suppose.

@GemLettuce @1000umbrellas Didn't remember this so just watched expecting the absolute worst. It didn't come so I watched it two more unpleasant times (as part of my duties at the IHAS) On all sides, a major cringe fest, for sure.
I don't know PY beyond long ago headlines. I vaguely remember what happened to her, so won't talk about how she comes across to me in that clip. Blame her manager/PR/publicist if you want to blame someone. Why was she there?

I see humour is generally lost on you. But my larger point was that you stated this very definitively.

He gets paid by the company and the company pays his lawsuits. The shares were bought at low value, hence the shareholders liability is very limited.

When you really have no way of knowing as their structure and finances are not public.

Additionally, a shareholder's personal financial liability isn't dependent on what the shares were worth at the time of purchase, but rather their current value. Which again, as it's not public, none of use have insight into. Unless you're trying to tell us you're a shareholder in PI?

SleeplessinSouthwold · 10/11/2022 14:06

@Wallaw You just gave me an idea. In the spirit of public interest there might be a call from me for PI to become a public? I'd buy.
If one considers the market as one big rotten apple, it could be the start of something, a pip of reality-check on the inside? The more PI goes up the more👀to the rest of the apple? Or does it remain stronger private, even with potentially one very disgruntled imaginary shareholder?

I do know he gets paid by the company. And I do know the company pay his lawsuits. Because he's said so in interviews.
