My daughter has recently turned 12 and has been begging my to let her get her ears pierced, she is adamant on the thought of going to claire's because it's " the cool place to go" but i've heard mixed reviews about it.

I've looked on the website and the earrings are super expensive i was quite shocked! For the people who have been how was your child's healing process experience afterwards?

It shouldn't be about price. A decent piercing place isn't necessarily cheaper. They now try to sell you that if you get your ears pierced, you have to go back to them for 'special' earrings and they need to change the earrings for you, etc. Plus they also sell a 'cleaning' lotion. They upsell as much as anywhere else.

I had my ears pierced at a jewelers. Friend had them done at Claire's. Other friend at a piercer's. Claire's was cheapest. Both Claire's and piercer's got infected - because my friends didn't look after them properly. There are pros and cons for all places. Just make sure you clean them properly afterwards and opt for expensive metal as lots of people can be allergic to cheap metal earrings.

Most will advise you to go back to have the piercing checked and when ready changed to a different earring. This is because the started earrings are longer to allow for swelling. They also usually provide the follow up and the second earrings free of charge. As this in included in the overall price.

I got my daughters done at Claire’s a couple of months back. They’re great! Cost £50 including earrings, they have healed really, really well. Very sterile, and very pleased with the results

People who don't know anything about piercing often think Claires are 'great'.

My dds had theirs done at Clare's in the summer holidays. Out of the three, one had problems, and that was caused by her constantly tightening the earrings despite being told to leave them alone. It was fairly expensive though, they strongly encourage you to have the more expensive earrings. They use disposable guns now so a new one for each earring, and in the store we used they cleaned the whole area in between each child (Ipswich town centre).

This. Anyone knowledgeable about piercings will avoid places like that.

In all honesty I think piercers should be properly regulated, like chiropodists or opticians. It’s basically minor surgery and should be treated as such, with qualified professionals and proper aftercare. Retail outlets like Claire’s and Louisa should be banned from inflicting their piercing guns on under-16s at the very least. DON’T let your DD have her ears done there. Too risky.

I find it absolutely bizarre that children can be forced against their will to get piercings.
I'm actually surprised it isn't illegal.
Anyone else think it's strange?

I had my second piercings at Claire's on a whim a few years ago and they were so uneven that they had to take one of the new earrings out again and re-pierce it.

I had my third piercing at Accessorize and that was fine.

I usually find the best experience is at a proper piercing/tattoo studio. I have 7 ear piercings and the ones that have been the least hassle in regards to aftercare are the ones that were done at a piercing specialist.

First child had hers done there. She got nasty infections. The others had theirs done a jeweller using the Inverness system. Much better and less painful.
