Upset about post on Instagram

My daughter has just set up a business with an Instagram account, so I've recently started using it regularly. I'm 65.

I only follow her and a couple of designers, and get a lot of posts coming up when I log in.

Does anyone know how to avoid sites involving animals? I've googled without success.

I was really upset tonight to see a video of a poster 'teasing' a dog, and the dog looked scared. When I looked at his profile he has some awful photos on there, he has two dogs, and is based in Nepal. I tried to report the site, but could only 'block' it.

On Instagram you will only be able to see items posted by members which you 'follow'. So check that list. If there's members on that list which you didn't follow, you may have been hacked.

Thank you so much , I'm off to change my password right now.

Did you check your 'follow' list?

This isn't true, all kinds of things can show up in your feed. If something like this comes up again you can press the three dots on the top right of the post and choose the option you'd prefer, i.e. 'don't show me posts associated with this' for example

paulmccartneysbagel · 06/11/2022 20:00

You can report - if you go to the persons profile, there are three dots in the top right hand corner. Press that and then the option to report is listed.

mynameischloe · 06/11/2022 20:00

@LittleCrackers I've never had that before, not on Instagram. That's strange!

You have not been hacked…please ignore this person who has no idea what they are on about

instagram will push random suggested ‘reels’ which are videos that it thinks you will be interested in. The more people you follow on Instagram, the more tailored your suggested reels will be.

you need to report the things you don’t like but there is no blanket way of blocking animal content

Instagram has recently changed their algorithm so it'll show you people and posts that you don't follow. It's extremely annoying.

For some reason I keep getting videos and posts about people who have had stillborns or their children are very sick (extremely distressing - I'm also 25wks pregnant!)

I'm not sure how you can stop it other than keep scrolling when they come up and try not to read or spend too long on the posts or you'll end up seeing more

mynameischloe · 06/11/2022 20:04

@Suprima wow.., "please ignore this person who has no idea what they're on about".

You sound charming.

Apologies, OP. It appears people who are far more knowledgeable on the subject have come to your rescue. I bow down to their wisdom. I'm just a normal person sat at home trying to help someone who asked a question.

Jeez.

GoAgainstNicki · 06/11/2022 20:07

People really need to stop giving advice on things they know absolutely nothing about.

You haven’t been hacked and it isn’t the people you follow. Instagram are now like TikTok in the sense where they’ll show everything and anything on your feed even if you don’t follow them. All you can do is click ‘not interested’ on a video or picture.

The explore page is full of BS

Borka · 06/11/2022 20:08

If you click on the instagram logo at the top of the screen then select 'following' from the drop-down, you will only see people you're following.

There was nothing wrong with @Suprima's post, they were just pointing out that your advice was wrong. No need to be defensive, all being well saying just trying to help, but if it's wrong advice it doesn't help 🤷‍♀️

Borka · 06/11/2022 20:09

But you need to do this every time you open instagram, it doesn't save your preference.

You don’t need to chime in if you don’t know enough about the subject matter. It’s not about “bowing down to their wisdom” it’s just realising you don’t actually know so instead of giving stupid incorrect advise just … shhhhhh.

Would you advise someone how to fix a catalytic converter if you didn’t know how? No.

PP is correct OP, Instagram algorithm will show you suggested reels, usually based on things you’ve watched before, if you’re new it will just show you reels that have lots of likes, or are trending or I’ve had just mega random ones. All you can do is click the 3 dots in the bottom right corner (on iPhone anyway) and click not interested and it will start to learn what videos to show you. Obviously if you find this intrusive I would just not watch any reels but you’ll still see suggested reels / content in your feed

LittleCrackers · 06/11/2022 20:15

OP: I've got a rash on my ankle
Poster1: cut your leg off
Poster2: don't listen to P1, that's wrong
P1: Goddddd I'm only trying to help

😂

Salome61 · 06/11/2022 20:32

Thank you everyone for posting, I really appreciate you replying. In future I will just scroll by quickly.
