Supermarket versions of restaurant food- how similar are they

Is a pizza express pizza in a box from the shop the same as one from pizza express?

What about Yo Sushi? Never been to these places so wondering how similar they are.

Not the same. I like the pizza express pizzas we get in Tesco but they are nowhere near as nice as the ones at the restaurant. I'm not sure I've had Yo Sushi from a supermarket but no prepacked sushi I've ever had has been as nice as fresh stuff.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/11/2022 18:07

The supposedly Pizza Express pasta was not good 🤢

TheWurst · 04/11/2022 18:07

The Pizza Express chicken pasta you get from Tescos tastes like the same thing to me. I wouldn’t say the pizza is as good but probably because I don’t have a pizza oven to cook it in.

The Yo Sushi supermarket sushi is nicer than Tesco or Sainsburys own but not as good as the restaurant which in itself is not a great sushi restaurant!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 04/11/2022 18:08

I don’t think they’re the same, no. The sauces/spices/ingredients should be the same I’d think?

red4321 · 04/11/2022 18:09

I prefer the Tesco own brand pizza to the Pizza Express one. The PE dough balls are nice though.

The Tesco sushi is also surprisingly nice.

The Yo Sushi supermarket sushi is nicer than Tesco or Sainsburys own but not as good as the restaurant which in itself is not a great sushi restaurant! this is handy. I've been to a really great sushi place so I might just save up to go there again, I quite liked the prepackaged stuff as like you say nicer than the supermarket.

What do we think of the make your own nandos kits? The same? Or not? I guess a lot of that comes down to what chicken is used though.

@pastabakeonaplate For nicer but not crazy priced sushi I like Sushi n sticks if you have one near you.

pastabakeonaplate · 04/11/2022 18:14

@TheWurst I have heard of this! But no, none near me. We have a great independent one though. Might give yo a miss now I know where it fits on the scale.

OP posts:
TheWurst · 04/11/2022 18:18

I’d pick the independent any day, sadly we don’t have one here. We are currently looking at areas to move to might add it to the list of requirements 😉

AriettyHomily · 04/11/2022 18:19

I like the Nando's kits but the same as actual Nando's, pizzas are all a bit shit. Pasta is likely exactly the same as they warm up in the restaurants.

I had Leon waffle fries from Sainsburys tonight & they were excellent!

Lysianthus · 04/11/2022 18:28

I had a voucher for the Carluccio range and it was good. But v expensive...

They're lovely, I really like those

How about the wasabi chicken katsu from Sainsbury’s? Anyone tried that?

Isseywith3witchycats · 04/11/2022 18:32

the TGI Fridays ones are definitely not the same i worked for tgis and when theirs came out bought a couple of things didnt taste anything like in the restaurant asked at work and the buy it in the shops ones are based on the American recipes not the UK ones (and not as nice) the Harry Ramsden fish ones are ok and the new cathedral cheddar range is very tasty if you like cheese

Moon22 · 04/11/2022 18:32

I like the Greggs range from Iceland.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 04/11/2022 18:39

I also like the Itsu Bao buns/Gyozas but never had them in Itsu so not sure if they are the same.

Skinnermarink · 04/11/2022 18:40

The GBK burgers are good. Pizza express pizzas in supermarket are awful, overpriced and bland.

Nando’s you don’t really need the kit, I would buy the marinade you like and the peri salt and do the rest yourself. The sauces are exactly the same as in the restaurant.

I forgot those! I love the Gyoza fried. No idea how they do them in the shop as never been there either.

Is that a restaurant? It was a pain to do in the microwave if I'm honest.
