New house has solar panels and I have no clue

We've finally managed to purchase our first home and it has solar panels.
I need to get registered with someone for gas and electricity but I'm not sure how this changes that process.
Can I just phone whichever company has the best rates at the moment and tell them the house has panels? Should I go with the company the previous owners had?
I know the panels were put in 10+ years ago but not much else.
Any help would be most appreciated

You can look for the best deal for your gas and electricity in the usual way. Your Feed in Tariff can be with a different company.

Have the previous owners transferred the Feed in Tariff to you?

The feed in tariff is transferable

and the previous owners should have transferred that to you in the sale

brief info here

Current feed in tariffs are quite poorly paid back to you in comparison to an older one so would be worth trying to keep their one going

Also you can have different providers for your usage and for selling your excess

does yours have a storage battery? where you charge via excess solar in day and use yourself during the evening/night?

Thank you all, to answer a few questions, there isn't a storage battery. I've gone through the paperwork from the sale and can't find anything much about the solar panels but I've phoned the solicitors to ask if they have anything.

@blibblibs - I haven't read the whole thing - but you might find some things in this thread of interest?

There are different types of solar panels. The ones I have experience of are the ones that feed into the grid and you get money back every quarter after providing meter reads. The other is ones that provide energy for your personal use ie reducing your energy usage from the grid but only give you energy when the sun is shining. There is no storage battery.

I made a thread on moneysaving asking about it earlier and they proper freaked me out!
However something has gone right for me at last! The previous owner left a box with photos and paperwork which has just sat here for the last week as they haven't come to collect it. So I took a quick peak and all the paperwork for the panels are here! Not particularly honest of me but I figured they don't need them and I bought the house and every bit of junk in it so.....

I’m surprised your solicitor didn’t specifically ask for the solar panel details for you to transfer ownership to be honest. Pleased you have found the documents anyhow.

Do you have an MCS certificate?

Unicorn1919 · 04/11/2022 18:22

I always leave a box of paperwork for the buyer when I leave a house. What makes you think that they want the box back - it has probably been intentionally left for you with information about the house. No need to feel bad opening it!

blibblibs · 04/11/2022 19:07

I do now have an MSC, just have to figure out what's next!
The box definitely wasn't left for us, it had photos, divorce papers etc in it. But I have taken what we need from it regarding the house.

You should MCS certificate transferred into your name if you've not done it already.
