Trying to work out what happened to me yesterday?!

inigomontoyahwillcox · 04/11/2022 06:54

I got very bizarrely ill yesterday morning and for the life of me can't work out what was wrong.

Was mid way through some berry granola when I started feeling sick. Didn't think much of it but stopped eating. About 5 minutes later I went completely spaced out, eyes rolling to the back of my head - I honestly felt like I had taken something (was transported back to my ecstasy taking 20s but not in a good way), so much so that I checked my daughter's ADHD medication in case I'd taken one with my normal tablets but I hadn't (there were only 2 gone from the pack which corresponded with what she had taken).

I got very panicky so messaged my friends who live a few doors down and I went to theirs for a few hours (was working from home alone other than the kitchen fitter being there!) - I could hardly remember their names and kept getting these waves of feeling "high" accompanied with nausea. I eventually was sick and felt quite a bit better (the spaced out/on another planet feeling mainly subsided) and made my way home. Spent the evening still feeling nauseous and very tired. Took my usually tablets again and went to bed but have spent the night feeling very sick, headache and occasionally spaced out/having weird thoughts.

WTF? Did I ingest some funny berry in my granola? Was it an odd panic attack, atypical migraine, bog standard stomach bug with added bizarre symptoms? All very strange.

As not to drip feed, I take propranolol for migraines (have done for about 13 years) along with lansoprazole (again, have had for years). Unless there's been some fuck up at the factory I can't imagine they caused it.

Mumsnet medical sleuths - do you have any ideas? I didn't seek medical advice as I wasn't sure exactly what to say? "I feel like I'm on drugs but I haven't taken any"?

I’m sorry, that sounds worrying for you
I’d have a chat with your GP, to rule out any seizure activity 🌸

Wiglio · 04/11/2022 07:02

Could have been a sudden dip on your blood pressure, a syncope.
I get it every so often, comes on out of the blue, nausea, feeling very fatigued and unwell. Have to lie down and it wears off after about half a hour.

I didn't think to check my BP (have a monitor at home as have to check DHs due it being high recently). Just checked now as feeing a bit off again this morning, -13/78 so pretty normal.

Please go to your doctor. Not to be alarmist but anything affecting your brain like that needs investigation. Could be seizures as someone upthread said. But certain types of migraines also put you at higher stroke risk. Im not medical, migraines & stroke in my family. Could also just be a weird allergy to something in the cereal, linseed makes me lightheaded/vomit. But you need to get medical investigation.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 04/11/2022 07:21

113/78 I meant of course (think I'd be dead at 13!).

I'll send the GP a message via their online system as it's impossible to get through on the phone.

Could you have developed a nut anaphylaxis?

PAFMO · 04/11/2022 07:23

You should definitely be checked out, but as pp says, it sounds similar to the effects of a sudden drop in blood pressure. I've had something similar happen twice- both times oddly after taking paracetomol and codeine. (I'll not touch it again, though doc said it was probably unrelated)

My chest felt very tight but I put it down to anxiety/panic.

I feel like that on days my blood pressure drops. It’s not fun.

AltheaVestr1t · 04/11/2022 07:26

Could it have been a panic attack? Extreme panic can feel absolutely awful.

sheusesmagazines · 04/11/2022 07:28

Of course speak to the GP but I'd say nasty tummy bug. The viruses doing the rounds at the moment seem to be particularly bad.

That's what I initially though it must be - I've had a lot of panic attacks in the past although not for a good few years now. The drugged up type feeing was something new though.

You said the kitchen fitter was there. Was he using any strong adhesives that you could have inhaled? That could of made you feel funny.

I don't think so - they've just been ripping the old one out and putting the units in at the moment. The gas pipe has been temporarily capped off - maybe it's leaking, would gas make me feel like this?

You definitely need to get brain/cardio checked out, and don't be fobbed off. However, I did wonder if it might be migraine related- they can manifest in some strange ways.

Fleurdaisy · 04/11/2022 09:01

I think you should get checked out by your GP. They’ll take your BP sitting, then standing and can check other things too,
I have a few weird food allergies, and some which are more reactions but don’t involve the immune system. Your symptoms are very much like mine would be if I drank coffee or ate pineapple so check the granola ingredients.

onmywayamarillo · 04/11/2022 09:12

There is a bug going around with very similar symptoms.. I had it mildly and 1 of my kids felt awful for days.

Felt sick, light headed and woozy.

Kids had banging headaches , felt sick were sick and light headed.

No, probably not gas. We had a leak outside our house recently which they couldn't get to for a couple of weeks and was quite serious. The engineers talked us very carefully through how they risk assess and how strong the stuff they put in to detect by smell is and so on.

Hope you get your answer!

Hoping it's this as I am a bit freaked out by it all to be honest. Maybe a bug, which has made me feel woozy which in turn has made me a bit panic-y, which in turn has its own set of symptoms.

I've sent the GP a message - not that I am expecting a response any time soon - I sent them one about DH a couple of weeks ago as he deteriorated after getting an upper respiratory bug (temp, difficulty breathing, BP getting higher and higher) - ended up taking him to A&E and he was diagnosed with pneumonia and was pumped with antibiotics, got a message back from the GP 2 days later!

OP please push your GP for an urgent medical appointment today. If they can't then I would call 111 for advice or go to A&E.

I know PP have said about low blood pressure. However I also feel the symptoms you have described could be an epileptic aura. It is a focal aware seizure and a warning that further seizures could follow. Please read up on auras online. The nausea, feeling of panic, eyes rolling, spaced out feeling, and migraines could all indicate some form of seizure. There are so many kinds and you don't need to be having a full on stiff & shaking body, eye-rolling seizure on the floor to have experienced some form or seizure. But these could follow. With what you have described I would be pushing for an urgent brain MRI. No matter what it is, from what you have described you need to see a doctor.

I have witnessed first hand in someone close to me how you can go to bed one night and be epileptic the next day for life with absolutely no history or seizures.

I really don't mean to scare you and hope it isn't anything that serious, but IME I would not take any chances from what you have described.

FluffingtonMuffington · 04/11/2022 10:26

Another one saying it could be syncope. I feel like this sometimes when bp drops. Go to gp though

Crikey. Are auditory hallucinations a symptom of this do you know? I've had a couple recently - very disconcerting.

bellalou1234 · 04/11/2022 16:34

No help but I once had a really funny turn with a jacket potatoe

TicketToRideFan · 04/11/2022 16:48

I had similar, it was a blood pressure issue. My face was deep purple and I was exhausted!
