£12 for a single key cut?

Is £12 the normal price for getting a single key cut nowadays? Haven't needed one for years and this is the price at Timpsons. It seems very expensive to me, am I just out of touch?

Yes I was shocked when I went last year and paid £22 for two keys. It took less than 5 mins.

grafittiartist · 03/11/2022 21:37

£7 here .
I thought that was a lot!

breathcalmly · 03/11/2022 21:48

Ditto, I was shocked when I went to Timpsons. 5 mins and a tiny bit of metal, grghh

I think home bargains have a key cutting service - 3 keys for £10.

HappyKoala56 · 03/11/2022 22:42

I used Timpsons last week - I paid £12 for two

Hollypups · 03/11/2022 22:43

I went to There recently … I think it was £7 for 1, £12 for 2 or £18 for 2 but the more fancy ones with pics on.

IheartBTS · 03/11/2022 22:44

I paid 2 for £10 earlier this week (independent cobbler).

chrisrobin · 03/11/2022 22:46

I had a load of keys cut this week, £2.50 for a cylinder key and £3 for a mortise from my local independent hardware shop. I was going to go to the Timpsons in Tesco, I had no idea it would be £12 a key though, I'm glad I didn't now

Magicmagician · 03/11/2022 22:47

£4.75 at the local cobblers last week - now feeling like I had a bargain tbh

TippledPink · 03/11/2022 22:48

Mine are £30 each from Timpsons, we didn't bother buying them. Apparently all the new locks have expensive keys now!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/11/2022 06:54

It's not even a fancy key - just a big standard Yale one. I will try an independent and see if it's cheaper. I guess you pay for the convenience of doing it at the end of your shop.

Sorry - bog standard. It's just normal sized!

Yes I have been recently shocked at the price of keys - I always thought Timpsons was reasonable. I will look for an independent (probably in the market) next time!

MegGriffinshat · 04/11/2022 08:33

We moved into a new house with only one set of keys. There are three locks on the porch and front door.

Needed sets for dh and ds and an emergency set for in laws.

I couldn’t afford to get them all done in the same month.

Mamamia7962 · 04/11/2022 08:39

Timpsons prices are extortionate. I always get my keys cut at a small independent cobblers.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/11/2022 08:41

It depends on the key but that is high for a Yale key. I get mine done on the local market for a couple of quid.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 04/11/2022 08:41

Timpsons charged me £25 to put a new battery in my watch the other week. I won't be using them again ever

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/11/2022 13:08

I went to my local independent cobbler who charge £8.50 each. I needed two so £17 which is only £1 cheaper than Timpsons who give you a second for half price. I have a new super dooper security lock and the keys say patent something or other on them so maybe they're expensive blanks from Yale. Bloody expensive and I'll need more at some point at 2 kids going up to secondary next year. Sigh.
