What's going on with my surgical scar - Pic with pubes (sorry..)

Had an operation 3 and a half weeks ago which saw me opened up part way over my original section scar and then carried on towards my hip. This will be the 3rd time I've been operated on in the same place as had 2 sections previously. The bit where its overlapped old scaring is causing me jip. It stinks (just that bit) keeps leaking sticky stuff and has gone hard underneath. This started a week and a half ago. I've had a weeks worth of antibiotics for it (GP app over the phone but not physically seen it) but it's no better. Not sure that it's infected as I'm not ill and it's not got worse, it's just not getting any better. Do I just sit this out and wait for it to knit?

Also at the left side of the pic you can see the knot at the end - what do I do with this - leave it and it will drop off?

I do apologise for the pubes, but for a million quid you would catch me de-hailing around that area currently! I will speak to the GP again, just thought I'd get opinions on it first.

Clearly name changed for this 😳

The picture is much clearer on my phone than what's up loaded here!

It doesn't look bad but from what you've said about it I think you'll get prescribed antibiotics. It's probably a localised infection due to the smelly discharge. Since it's just localised that's why you're not feeling ill with it.

I had the same with one of my c section scars. It kept leaking and taking a while to heal, antibiotics cleared it up. I wasn't sick with it.

Thank you - I've had a weeks worth of antibiotics (well last day tomorrow) already. Strong buggers and all!

My second section did this exact same thing. It healed within a month with anti biotics

If it’s still oozing and smelling then I don’t think the antibiotics have done the job. I’d go get it seen again.

They might take a swab and prescribe you different antibiotics

I had a section last year. My wound actually looked really nice and not separated like this but I had a hematoma which caused a continuous bleed from a tiny bit on the scar. I had 2 courses of antibiotics and it continued to bleed. I ended up in a hospital with suspected sepsis on IV antibiotics. Turned out, the bacteria was resistant to the antibiotics I had.
I was fine one day and had a temperature of 41 C the next day. Dont underestimate this.

Also, contact the department where you were operated on. They should be looking at this.

I needed about 6 weeks antibiotics after my c-section and god it stank. I suspect your body is just not on top of it yet.

Is the knot thread? If it's tight and close to the skin then you might need to snip it off, but I'd leave it another week or so in case it's not closed up. I had a knot at the end of my section scar that wouldn't come away and was itchy - almost like the scar was trying to heal around it, and the midwife snipped it off for me. My uterus didn't fall out but it isn't a risk i was willing to take myself. I wonder if a practice nurse would have a look at it and the oozy bit for you.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/11/2022 22:53

Keep a very close eye on temp. It looks fine, it will knit, but temp and feeling unwell is a good indicator of sepsis and infection.

When I had a Banjul surgical wound lol this I went to the walk in minor injuries clinic and they were amazing! They gave me antibiotics and dressed it with an iodine dressing I think.

Another option if GP is too stressful for you
