How do you stop kids wellies from filling with water?

DS loves a puddle like most toddlers, but also seems to choose the deepest ones. His feet get soaked every time we go out and his wellies are permanently upside down on the towel rack to dry.

Is there some magical invention we're missing that can help stop water getting in over the top, like a waterproof gasket?!

Waterproof trousers which are pulled down the outside of the wellies.

Only solution I've found is longer wellies, up to knees and waterproof trousers. Lidl do great waterproof trousers really thick and kind of rubbery with a soft lining so they make the wellies snug and kind of form a bit of a seal.

Some wellies come with flexible tops on a drawstring to close around the legs. Otherwise, put waterproof over trousers on over the boots.

Ah we have a waterproof puddle suit but haven't tried the trousers over the top! Thanks!

A lot of brands of waterproof trousers/suits have foot straps that keep them in place over the boots. If yours don't have the straps, you can sew on some buttons to the inside of the leg openings and make your own from buttonhole elastic. This will help, but unless you get full fisherman's waders (which is probably possible!), an enthusiastic puddle jumper in a deep puddle will always be able to get a bit of water inside the boots.

What you can do is tell him, "Not that puddle, that one is too deep. Come and jump in this one instead." You don't have to allow them to jump in every single puddle.

Yes to waterproof trousers outside! Decathlon also do wellies with no fabric lining inside so they just need a wipe out and they are good to go again. So much easier! And comfy too!

Yes always the trousers over the top. It was a revelation when I realised Grin

This is after a particularly enthusiastic puddle walk with DP while I wait in hospital for an induction, so passing the time trying to think of solutions Grin

We used to put our toddlers in waterproof trousers with elasticated ankles that went over the wellies (from Jojos but that was a few years ago!)
