Bad dreams just before I wake up

The past week I've found myself going into a lighter sleep shortly before my alarm goes off and having terrible dreams. I sleep well the rest of the night (I think!) but then having these dreams just before I wake up... I feel terrible the rest of the day, with the mood hanging over me and my heart beating faster.

Does this happen to anyone else? Or any ideas for how to stop it happening?

Yes me. It’s horrible. My DF complains about unpleasant dreams a lot, so I assume it’s either getting older or anxiety.

I take Sertraline for anxiety and I don't generally have these dreams since starting that, but this week they are really bothering me! @KangarooKenny sorry that it happens to you too, its so rubbish and effects the whole day

My DH is on antidepressants and when stressed he gets nightmares.

It happens to me as well. It’s horrible.

I’m the same at the moment, wake up hands clenched too. I’m considering yoga or swimming before bed tbh.

Its sounds strange but I often have bad or very vivid dreams when I really need to pee so that might be partly why it happens just before you wake up.

aghostinthethroat · 03/11/2022 08:38

@Prettypaisleyslippers I wake up with my jaw clenched!

I still feel anxious now, it's so awful how it just stays with you into waking too

I have weird/unsettling dreams when I wake up and go back to sleep. Maybe it's the lighter mornings bringing you into a lighter sleep? I would set your alarm 30 mins earlier (go to bed earlier too if concerned that will leave you too tired).

SalviaOfficinalis · 03/11/2022 08:53

I’ve been the same recently. Agree with Bertie, I think it’s the lighter mornings making my sleep lighter.
Also it seemed very cold last night, think that was disturbing me a bit too.

Ah, it could be the light, you're right! I have eye mask somewhere, I'll try to dig that out... I don't want to get up any earlier than I already do tbh (6am)!
