Coffee machine recommendations

I'm looking to buy DH a coffee machine for his birthday (maybe split between bday and Xmas if it's pricey) but I really don't know where to start!
I think I'm sure we don't want one with pods, he'd rather have pre-ground coffee beans or a bean to cup machine.
What do I need to be looking at?
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I don't want to buy a cheapy machine I want something robust and hardy

We have this bought in 2016, still going strong and gives me so much pleasure everyday.☕

Thanks @babyyodaxmas and can you get different volumes of coffee? I think the pictures of all these machines put me off cause they seem tiny cups?!

Yes anything up to about 200mls. There is also a double button for a bigger drink or 2 at the same time.

Ok fab will take a detailed look. Thanks!

Delonghi bean to cup are very good, we have a Cappuccino eletta. Very good.

CheeseMaiden · 01/11/2022 20:28

Sage machines, every time!

We have a Gaggia Classic - it's been a fantastic machine, had it for years and use it daily.

Filleto · 01/11/2022 20:35

I have a delonghi magnifica bean to cup, I like it. We got the one with the integrated milk jug but actually for the amount we use that function I’d save the £ and get one where you froth it yourself. Mostly we just make a long coffee and add cold milk if wanted.

Magelica · 01/11/2022 20:37

babyyodaxmas I have that exact machine and while the coffee is great, I just cannot get the milk to froth with the frothing wand. It scalds heats it fine, but I can't raise a bubble, with or without the plastic hood thing. Is there a knack? Help!

Do you want an espresso type machine or to make filter coffee?

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 01/11/2022 20:50

Without a doubt Sage coffee machines are the ultimate for proper coffee.

onlyconnect · 01/11/2022 20:56

The best coffee comes out of a stove-top Italian style percolator

TheFTrain · 01/11/2022 20:59

We've got a Sage Barista Express and love it.

Had a delonghi Eletta one and absolutely hated it and sent it back after 6 months. Now got a sage barista and love it as I can make it exactly how I want it

Erm I'm not sure! At the moment DH buys ground coffee and uses a cafetiere.
He mentioned about having a fancy inbuilt machine when we move house (not any time soon) so that gave me the idea for buying a machine but I really don't know!

Well, for filter coffee I highly recommend the Cuisinart Grind and Brew!

driftinginthewind · 01/11/2022 21:03

I got a Sage Barista Express last year on Prime day with a chunky discount. I use it multiple times a day and it's already paid for itself in terms of coffee savings! Highly recommended

ProperVexed · 01/11/2022 21:11

I've got the same one as babyyodaxmas. It's brilliant!

Isn't it ? Has ruined any other coffee for me.

ProperVexed · 01/11/2022 21:25

@babyyodaxmas I know! We had a weekend away for our 25 wedding anniversary and there was one in the cottage we stayed in. We went to John Lewis on the way home and bought one! I use it every day and just love it!
If the house was burning down I would grab the coffee machine ( and the cat and my camera) on my way out of the door.

HoppyHop · 01/11/2022 21:28

Sage Barista Express. A family lock down gift! Used everyday and love it. We got it from Costco

Brigante9 · 01/11/2022 21:29

Sage Barista, it has 2 sizes, but you can just keep pressing the button to get more. It’s a bean to cup machine.

catfunk · 01/11/2022 22:03

We have the sage barista express after a lot of recommendations and research. It is excellent for a small home machine (I used to work as a barista too so have experience with industrial coffee machines)

Only thing I would say is it takes a bit of time and effort to set it up properly, get the pressure and grind size right. There's lots of help and videos on YouTube etc.

catfunk · 01/11/2022 22:04

I also sometimes buy beans from aldi and Lidl and nobody can tell the difference between those and our local roastery which costs 4x more

NemoNotThatOne · 01/11/2022 22:05

Another vote for the Magnifica.
