What's with all the threads where the person supposedly being posted about pops up on the thread within 5 minutes?

Noticed a few recently. OP will write about an issue they are having (two recent ones have been about family members). 5 minutes later the family member appears on the thread saying 'hi everyone, I am the family member being talked about!' and then starts ranting about the OP. Is this the new way of trolling now?Confused

OP posts:

Looks like it. Once might be mildly amusing, but we're into overkill now.

BIWI · 01/11/2022 15:08

More trolling.

TheIsaacs · 01/11/2022 15:15

Sock puppeting their own stupid trolly threads.

Dallimore · 01/11/2022 15:17

@TheIsaacs that's what I was wondering, is the 'family member' the troll doing it thinking they're funny, or is the OP actually the troll sock puppeting on their own thread?🤔

OP posts:
TheIsaacs · 01/11/2022 15:54

I think the second one. Start the thread, sock puppet a reply as the “other person”, double the drama win for them.

afaloren · 01/11/2022 15:54

The Halloween one was hilarious, I was gutted they deleted all the posts.

PAFMO · 01/11/2022 15:57

Yeah.
Always been a few of these.
It's similar to when RandomMumsnetter posts about her favourite ever Mumsnetter (herself under an old name) then 6 posts down namechanged and does the "well, hellairrrr" thing.
Both equally tedious and transparent.

What happened there?

Soubriquet · 01/11/2022 15:58

Apparently Reddit are involved but who knows

ShineOnYouLikeMorningStar · 01/11/2022 16:00

It's boring & pretty cliche TBH.

FlibbertyGiblets · 01/11/2022 16:00

I understand why troll hunting is strictly against guidelines, but I do miss a teeny bit being able to say Chinny/Chinny Reckon, sigh.

afaloren · 01/11/2022 16:05

@LeMoo someone posted saying someone had been cheeky to them on Halloween demanding alternative sweets and then ‘that person’ showed up on the thread saying how unreasonable the OP had been. I’ll probably get deleted now for telling you Hmm

LeMoo · 01/11/2022 16:08

@afaloren oh, thanks

Lot of drama today then

Meh. Same troll, different day. Drama would be interesting.

OldTinHat · 01/11/2022 16:18

Oh. I've been very invested in these today. I didn't realise the troll was the OP.

Damnit. I am officially a gullible idiot.

girlmom21 · 01/11/2022 16:30

The woman who "got told to stop running because of her size D boobs" had one of these 'I was there' trolls yesterday. MNHQ said the two weren't actually related so deleted the I was there troll first then deleted the OP later.

dinaminion · 01/11/2022 16:32

I think there is also someone, or several people, starting deliberately disingenuous controversial threads, either just for fun to wind people up, or as some sort of social experiment, who knows. I think they are perhaps testing the boundaries of what will and won't be moderated. Of course, if we mention it they know we'll be called out for troll hunting, so perhaps that is part of the attraction.

dinaminion · 01/11/2022 16:34

Perhaps there is a new trend for Mumsnet Baiting 🙂

I don't think there's any reason to say the Obvious Subreddit is "involved", other than they have a discussion, much like this one, over there at the moment.

That Subreddit doesnt condone trolls or trolling. So perhaps you're thinking of a different one which does?
