40 year old and just been barred from a pub

Was out with dh last night before a concert. Pub was heaving as next to the arena. We had a few drinks then felt hungry and ordered wings and fries to see us through.
Before we left I grabbed by bag and jacket to head to the toilet and when I came back seen the waiter talking to dh with the card machine in his hand and we left.
After checking online banking this morning I asked how he paid for the meal as it wasn't showing.
We then had some back and forth with him insisting I went to the bar to pay and me saying no I went to the toilet you paid the waiter and him saying no the waiter came over and I told him you were paying.
Phoned the bar to apologise over the phone and the guy went mad at me! Called me all the liars under the sun and told me he had a good mind to find me on the cctv and upload my picture to social media 🙈 He then told me I was never welcome back again.
I understand it was 100% dh and my fault but I wasn't expecting that reaction for trying to do the right thing,

Well that's a bit stupid (of them). You realised your mistake owned it. You could easily have not bothered!

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 31/10/2022 17:12

He was well OTT that is ridiculus sure you rang and owned up. Did they take the payment in the end over the phone ? Easy mistake to make.

monkeypox55 · 31/10/2022 17:16

He took the payment from me but huffed about it. He wanted me to come in and pay to start with but we live quite far away (though go to quite a few concerts in this place)
I just couldn't believe how aggressive he was about it all 🙈

Some places are fed up with people doing a runner but he as stupid to react like that when you had offered to pay.

hw May have thought you were lying and had remorse but he could have kept those thoughts to himself.

The best things restaurants can do to avoid this is to have a card safe so you give your card over when you order.

LynetteScavo · 31/10/2022 17:26

I wouldn't consider myself barred, I consider myself never returning to such a rude establishment. It was an honest mistake and you owned up.

bodgerandbadgerrr · 31/10/2022 17:32

How could he go through the cctv to find you if he doesn’t know who you are if it was your dh the waiter spoke too?

Mariposista · 31/10/2022 17:42

THEY deserve a bad report on SM/Tripadvisor. You were honest and apologetic (way more than most would be) and he has behaved like a total dick.

johnd2 · 31/10/2022 17:44

It's not about you, it's about him!

shinynewapple22 · 31/10/2022 17:44

@Mariposista I would be doing the same .

Don't think it would be too hard, I told him we were sat next to the piano and what our order was. I don't think he'd have too much problem trying to Shame me on his social media. Not sure what he would write about me though seeing as how I have now paid.

Mistakes happen and you've rectified it - I don't know what else they wanted from you.

They are lucky that these cheeky f**kers haven't been to their venue

He sounds unhinged. I’d have probably hung up on him before paying if he behaved like that. You made a mistake and owned up to it. Not your fault that him and his staff let you walk out without paying.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 31/10/2022 18:07

That’s hilarious.

I’d go back there just to annoy him.

PuppyMonkey · 31/10/2022 18:09

I don’t understand his logic, he called you a liar about what had happened and why you ended up not paying? So if it was a lie, why would you then be ringing up explaining this to them and trying to pay the bill? You could have not rung and he’d never have been able to find you?Grin

WakingUpDistress · 31/10/2022 18:10

Something similar happened to me. We were a group, left with everyone thinking the others had paid.
We realised the day after what happened and went back, apologising profusely. The guys had the opposite reaction than that pub owner. They thank us for coming back, saying it was unusual and they appreciated it.

I would have been taken aback by his reaction tbh.

WakingUpDistress · 31/10/2022 18:14

Tbh putting your photo on social media would have backfired at him massively.
I angine having a go at someone saying they had t paid fir that ourson to come and explain the only way the owner knew is because they told him when they rang to pay that bill!
hed look like a twat. Which he was.

Meseekslookatme · 31/10/2022 18:17

I forgot to pay for my food about 3 times in a local pub (sometimes it was a tab, sometimes you paid at the bar)
They were lovely about it.
This guy was a twat.

Mariposista · 31/10/2022 18:21

Was he the manager of the premises? If not, I would ask to see him/her, wear your best power suit and put in a formal complaint about this employee's behaviour and rudeness.

This. Definitely this

ShahRukhKhan · 31/10/2022 18:34

How weird. Once I realised a group I was with had not paid the tab so I went back the next day to pay it. They were lovely and very surprised I came back

It was the manager, the staff member who answered the phone had no idea how to take my payment or bring up the receipt on the till so passed me onto the manager.
It did cross my mind to say F*ck You I'll give the money to the local food bank instead when he was growling and doing what sounded like that talking through his teeth thing but I thought
1/ That will definitely get me on his page
2/ our Waiter was amazing last night and run off his feet and I didn't want any of this to come back on him.

I dunno you know. Yes he shouldn't have reacted like that but we never know what others are going through. He could be on the verge of losing the business and super stressed out about it. This could have been the thing that pushed him to the edge. You did the right thing op but maybe give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he must be under a lot of pressure to react like that.

RedWingBoots · 31/10/2022 18:48

OP the reason he swore at you is because he likely did something nasty to your waiter e.g. took the money of him, abused him. The fact another staff member picked up the phone and tried to put your payment through means he has apologise or reverse what he did to the waiter.

Personally I would leave an online review to ensure he hasn't treated the waiter poorly.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 31/10/2022 18:51

Well he's a div then.

People who dine and dash don't phone up the next day to apologise.

And if he does upload it, I would make a point of commenting the actual facts of what happened and how abhorrently abusive and threatening he was.

Make a note to never return.

Jo586 · 31/10/2022 19:00

Guy was a div, you were being honest. Reminds me, on the last night of our holiday, I took the family out for a meal in Greece, went to pay, told me it's cash only. Well I only had a card and a few euros. Told him I would pop back to the villa, get some cash and return. About half an hour later I returned and paid them, about €110 from memory. Then ensued a conversation between the owner and the waiter, it transpired the waiter had bet his nights wage that I would not return. I just hope the owner did not claim the bet!
