At what point do you seek help for an insect bite?

I think I probably got it on Saturday, but I first noticed it yesterday morning. At that point it was quite red and angry looking, only mildly ithcy and contained as a small lump around the but site.

Today there's a large red patch, about the diameter of a tennis ball, which is hot and hard, a small (tiny) liquid filled blister in the centre and my leg is very swollen from the ankle to about halfway up my calf. The bite is on the lower calf. It HURTS, a lot. I can barely out my foot on the ground. I've had to cancel meetings because I wouldn't be fit to drive.

But it is only an insect bite and it is only a couple of days old...

Now would be a good time to seek help.

I’d want to see someone about that - not normal for it to hurt to walk in my experience. Minor injuries might be best bet?

Definitely now, probably yesterday. It is no longer 'just an insect bite'

Any chance it might be a tick bite? Now would be a very good time to get the bite checked out, you could always ask at your local pharmacy as a first step. Infected bites are nasty.

Yeah get yourself off to a Dr pronto. You'll probably need antibiotics. I had to go to a walk in clinic the same day I got bitten and was put on antibiotics straight away. Draw a line around the red mark so you can see if the red area is growing/infection is spreading

Yes definitely go today - GP

sueelleker · 31/10/2022 17:55

Cellulitis I reckon. Get it looked at asap.

You need to go now as it can very quickly turn into sepsis from the stage it has reached

You need antibiotics asap

Whizzi24 · 31/10/2022 18:13

Probably cellulitis. I had it a few years ago from an insect bite. Best to seek medical advice - the doctor told me it is dangerous if you get a red line that starts tracking towards your heart.

BlackaddersCodpiece · 31/10/2022 19:44

Did you see the bug and whereabouts do you live? There is a very small black fly in my area called a "Blandford Fly" which is notorious for nasty bites that go bad and need further treatment.

Definitely go and get yourself checked out, cellulitis leads to sepsis and is not to be messed with.

At the very least, see a pharmacist, but from what you've described, I think they'll send you to a GP anyway.

Not a qualified medic, but my husband often reacts like this. He is usually advised to take antihistamine and is often prescribed antibiotics too.
