Marathon Man

I saw this guy on BBC Breakfast this morning & he has run a marathon every single day this year & will continue until Dec 31st! Absolutely incredible! He’s raising money for MacMillan Cancer Care. It made me think about charities & what we all do. I support as many as I can with regular donations, buying raffle tickets etc but I’ve never done any major fundraising. Have you done anything big for charity?

Just saw your thread today, on Gary's final marathon of the year. I live near-ish him so lots on local social media these last few weeks, but glad it's made the main news this week and really pushed his donations up.
Amazing achievement for Gary, but so many lovely people behind the scenes too.

Frostine · 31/12/2022 13:14

Yes it's an amazing achievement .
Have been following him as live close
( West Cumbria ) and he has been on local BBC radio.
I think he was hoping to raise a million but hasn't made that. Although last time I looked it was about £600,000 but that was nearly a week ago.

catmademedoit · 31/12/2022 13:15

I've cycled from London to Paris 11 times .. each for charity

Great fun

Frostine · 31/12/2022 13:17

£782,000 raised so far.

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 31/12/2022 13:17

I only saw this today. It’s shot up to over 780,000 now (was still in the 600,000 when I first looked this morning), so it making the main news seems to have helped. Really hope he manages to make his target. It’s an incredible thing to do.

AuntieStella · 31/12/2022 13:18

I donated about a week ago

I think what he's doing is amazing (I've run exactly two, about six months apart!)

BBC article says he's raised over £600,000 but I've just looked and its now just over £781,000

Now that it looks like he's really going to do it, I hope he also reaches his fundraising target. He might, if it catches the public's imagination today

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/12/2022 13:20

My husband has run with him a few times.

Gary is a great guy doing a great thing.

One of his runs was near me (maybe more - I didn't hear about him until well in to the year). I wish I'd gone along!

AuntieStella · 31/12/2022 13:25

And just being a bit spotterish

The total is now £788,614 from 21,377 supporters
(and is creeping up each time I refresh the page)

Eddmr · 31/12/2022 13:27

Just donated and shared. Hopefully, he will reach his target.

EATmum · 31/12/2022 13:29

Just in awe. I ran London in October, for the hospice who cared for my mum. It was an incredible experience but took everything I had. The thought of doing it again. And again. And again ... just incredible! So much respect for him. And his toenails!!

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 31/12/2022 13:29

Just curious - how does he find the time to do this?

AuntieStella · 31/12/2022 13:36

He runs every morning, before going to work (he works shifts starting at 2pm)

When on non-working days, he has a lie in and starts running a couple of hours later.

(He doesn't seem to have any dependents or other hobbies!)

However does he fit in housework, life admin and so on? The mind boggles.

RoseAndRose · 31/12/2022 13:39

He has a wife and older school age DC. They are proud of him.

Presumably life admin is fitted in on his non-working days?

Welll done to your husband too. Gary seems to have had so much lovely support.

AuntieStella · 31/12/2022 18:03

It’s up to over £962,000

i really hope he makes the fundraising target!!

Stopyourmessingaround · 31/12/2022 18:18

What an amazing achievement and if you go onto his Justgiving page, he seems to do an extreme fundraising challenge every year. What an amazing mam. He's just slightly shy of his fundraising target if anyone wants to donate

mynameisnotkate · 31/12/2022 18:45

It’s an amazing achievement, but I think if I were his wife and children I’d resent it a bit - four hours plus running every single day! I think his wife must be doing a lot to facilitate this.

AuntieStella · 31/12/2022 19:17

He’s done it!!

Donations have just passed £1million!!

so pleased!

IDontCareMatthew · 31/12/2022 19:27

He has a wife?

Can you imagine her AIBU about a DH running everyday? Hobbies are barely tolerated on here!

I've ran a Marathon, bloody amazing it's a daily thing for him but long term his body must be buggered!
