Another "what's that movie" thread - possibly Jane Austen adaptation

Years ago I caught the end of a movie that I think was a JA adaptation - or something similar. Period costumes and dialogue, big country houses with ornate gardens etc. At the end, when the couple got together, the final shot was of them climbing to the top of a hill / mountain in (I think) Africa - basically they didn't do the typical "happily ever after in stultifying English upper class society.

Please can you help me find the film? Thank you! 😊

No idea but I want to know!

It doesn't sound like any JA novel - it would have to have been a very loose adaptation.

Definitely Wives and Daughters. Wonderful adaptation ❤️

Yes Wives And Daughters. It was a TV series, BBC I think. Elizabeth Gaskell actually died before finishing the book so there was a bit of a more modern ending than she might have written but who knows? Still a great adaptation thar I think about a lot. And a great one liner by Gaskell "I met your wife, doctor. One of us was very silly and it wasn't me".

Definitely Wives and Daughters - Justine Waddell as Molly, Tom Hollander and Anthony Howell as the Hamley brothers and Keeley Hawes as the step sister. It was a great adaptation!

Ah you are all brilliant. Thank you! And really sorry if I spoiled the ending for anyone.😳
