Awake worrying about DN after messages

Tonight I did my usual ‘wake up at 4ish and can’t get back to sleep so grab my phone and scroll FB’. My grown up (early 20s) DNephew sent a message pretty soon after I picked up my phone saying he had no electricity and could I send him some money. We’re a really close family (although he’s more distant then others) and I know from my mum he’s going through a tough time in general. After worrying it was a scam and making sure it wasn’t first, I did send him some money. It’s the first time he’s asked. I’m just worrying what’s going on with him. He was pretty desperate for the money. I’ll be speaking to family members later but can’t go back to sleep now for worry. DP’s also not a happy chap because I woke him to ask what I should do and he has to be up in 20 mins for work!🙈 I know nobody can advise really-just a bit shaken I suppose and worried for him.

That's very kind of you. Wait till the morning when things seem better and try and contact him to see if he needs any emotional support or guidance with his finance.

How far away does he live? Could you invite him over for dinner and see if he wants to talk?

girlmom21 · 27/10/2022 06:39

Go and see him. If he was desperate for money at 4am I'd be suspicious that it wasn't electricity he needs it for.

4am is a really strange time to be asking for money so desperately. I would be really concerned. Can you call him or pop round?

This. I’d be thinking drink or drugs

Ottersmith · 27/10/2022 06:56

I didn't think they cut your electricity off at night. When I was poor and paying by metre they would wait till morning to cut you off.

Intelligenthair · 27/10/2022 06:56

I thought drugs too, sorry OP.

Thanks all. After speaking to family today it definitely seems a complicated situation 😩. We’ll all rally and try to help where we can.
