Hotel Checkout - fake typing? (Light hearted)

I checked out of a large hotel on Monday morning. Next to the reception there was an Express Checkout box where you drop your room cards. I thought I best approach the guy on reception, just to make sure everything was paid for etc. as the payment had been ‘held’ against my credit card.

i said to the man: ‘I’d like to check out please’. He did a bit of typing on his keyboard and then said to me: ‘all checked out for you’. I looked confused and said: ‘how did you know my room number?’, he then said: ‘what’s your room number?’
I said: ‘406’. He then did a bit more typing and said: ‘all checked out, do you need a receipt?’

Was he fake typing the first time so as to not embarrass me because he doesn’t need any information from guests upon checkout?

Yep, most probably. Bless him!

Certainly looks like it! It's probably quicker than trying to explain that it wasn't necessary, and all the correct stuff would be taken off the card.

However, like you, Iike it made official, and with an itemised receipt!

This is funny, thanks.

Do you mean you checked out on a self service style machine?
Maybe his computer tells him the last room number that's checked out. So he typed to get that information and having witnessed you using the machine and not seeing anyone else use the machine after you - his computer telling him that room 406 has just checked out he would know that was you.
This is completely guessing. I have no clue how a hotel reception works.

No, there was no self checkout machine, just a box to put your card in. I just went to him on the reception and clearly displayed my lack of check out etiquette. I do appreciate him trying to not embarrass me…I managed to do that all on my own! 😂

Well, he doesn't actually need any info off you to check you out so he will have just said all done as really, it's done. Then when you leave he will key in your room number and actually process the checkout.

He was probably typing notes into a reservation or someth

Its weird OP. Technically later in the day they would check the rooms of anyone that they didn’t have confirmation of them leaving to make sure the room is empty and then settle any outstanding billing. If you put the keys in the express box, they would check regularly and process your checkout. They want to know who has left so that housekeeping can turn the room around.
