Disney plus are releasing a new one!

30th November.

Trailer is on there already. And yes Warwick Davies is back playing Willow

I loved the first film. I’m really excited about this one

Val Kilmer has throat cancer and can no longer speak.

Bloody hell that's awful.

StaceySolomonSwash · 01/12/2022 21:20

Pleased as punch about Willow though! Loved that film. Watched it the first night in my first house that I bought.

Sickoffamilydrama · 02/12/2022 10:51

Yes Kit @Soubriquet just not finding her likeable at all.

Sadly I think it's box ticking for example Willow in Buffy (yes I am this old and sad) was a much more rounded character and it wasn't just she's gay, personally she was much more reflective of my lesbian friends at the time than often what appears in series and films now.

I think by going into it with an agenda it ends up with the character becoming a bit regressive idea of what gay is rather than just part of a person's make up like anything else.

I've noticed this a lot with the Disney series lately they try and shoe horn every kind of diversity in but then it doesn't actually work. How about developing characters more and then they just happen to be gay.

Obviously I've thought far to much about this but DD and I were discussing it last night as we were watching it she's was also saying the same and trying to work out why some series and characters grab you more than others.

greenacrylicpaint · 02/12/2022 10:57

I loved it.

the baby was just so cute, baby's expressive face so beautufully filmed

Skiphopbump · 02/12/2022 11:04

I really enjoyed the film and watched it again last weekend.
It sounds like the series isn’t going to live up to expectations but after watching the trailer I’m glad to see Warwick isn’t attempting an American accent this time!

Val Kilmer has throat cancer and can no longer speak.

It doesn't rule him out appearing, they've worked around it in his last few movies;
His son sometimes dubs his voice for small roles.
They just rolled with it for "The Birthday Cake" his character had a tracheotomy pipe that needed covering to talk, and they put subtitles on when that happened.
and Spoiler for TOP GUN 2 ................... They wrote the throat cancer into the script.

Ciri · 02/12/2022 11:36

Bit trickier to write throat cancer into this script and top gun was an iconic part so a bit different.

who knows. He might appear. It’s Disney so the cash will be on offer

It's a fantasy film, they could come up with something.

LadyTwinkle · 07/12/2022 17:24

I think Warwick Davis has spent too long hosting quiz shows, because he delivers almost every line in a flat monotonous manner like he's reading it directly from an Autocue.

mizu · 10/12/2022 12:10

I'm quite enjoying - easy watch. Loved the original and watched it so many times with siblings.

Annoying princess, agree.

Christian Slater????? Shock god I hope he is in it.

Soubriquet · 11/12/2022 08:48

<sigh>

Well…this has been a massive let down really. It’s a struggle to even watch.

How come? I've been enjoying it but interested to hear your view?

Did you know that George Lucas and Chris Claremont wrote 3 sequel novels to Willow in the 1990s? Shadow Moon, Shadow Dawn and Shadow Star. They feature a teenage Elora Danan as the main character and have Willow turn into a weary, mega-powerful sorcerer named Thorn. Much darker than the movie but I personally like them.

They're not canon anymore due to this new series.

Soubriquet · 11/12/2022 15:07

I just don’t seem to like it. I agree with a PP that Warwick sounds too monotone. He doesn’t seem to be engaging with it at all.

I won’t be finishing it.

You're right. It's as though his heart isn't really in it. He's not even trying, everyone else is acting rings around him and it making his lack of effort really noticeable. I don't hate the series but I'm not loving it either.

Minikievs · 13/12/2022 12:45

I watched half an hour of the first one.

It was bloody painful. Awful acting, awful teenage American accents. I had to turn it off.

That'll teach me that what I loved as a pre teen, I won't necessarily enjoy in my mid 40s!

I agree with this. Just rewatching the film with a poorly DD, and his acting is noticeably better than it is in the film.

I'm quite enjoying the new series though, so far. I agree the princess is annoying.

Soubriquet · 13/12/2022 14:27

It’s also thrown me that two characters are wearing denim jeans.

This is supposed to be mythical. Old fashioned. The jeans threw me off and that’s when I lost interest.

Anachronisms don’t usually bother me…but this one did

Just quoting myself to correct my error - I meant his acting was noticeably better in the original film than in the new series.

I found this scene really jarring too. It was at complete odds with the rest of the episode in both it's tone and the costume design. It made a farce out of what was ultimately quite sad and tragic event.

It's not that, it's that most reboots/continuations of older media from the last decade or so are genuinely awful. The only real exception has been Cobra Kai, which is just joyously ott. And for kids, Ducktales.

Cobra Kai and Ghostbusters; afterlife

Are the only ones which have managed to build on the original, give a knowing wink to the cheesiness of it's franchise while not stepping into parody, both have also managed to deal with a main characters death in a respectful way.

LadyTwinkle · 13/01/2023 17:14

Is anyone still watching? I've still got the final episode to watch. I quite liked last week's episode. The star war's asthetic was very strong. There's been some good bits. I really liked Boorman and Graydon. And Christian Slater as Allagash was absolutely brilliant. I really dislike Princess Kit.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 13/01/2023 17:18

I watched the final episode last night. It doesn't have the same charm as the film, but I've enjoyed it. Hoping for a second series.

Bloody hell that's awful.

There’s a really good biopic on Netflix (?) about him in which he goes quite deep about his life and childhood etc - it’s really good - Joanne Whalley is in it too, I was pleasantly surprised at how northern she still sounds!

I have never rated him as an actor really
