Family tree

As I approach my 50th birthday I've decided I would like to look into doing a family tree. Could anyone please help on where I would even start? I am no contact with my DF and it's heading that way with my DM. I would just like to have something for my DC really, so they could see their roots. TIA

Start on the Genealogy board on here Wink

Seriously though, start with what you know. Parents, then their parents (your grandparents) and so on. There are lots of sites out there where you can build a family tree for free so sign up to one and get entering the info you have. You can do it on Ancestry or Find my Past without subscribing, I also use Tribal Pages as I like their trees.

You will probably need to order some certificates along the way to get the info you need - birth/marriage certificates are the most useful and they will cost £11 each. If you subscribe to Ancestry or Find my Past (which you will probably need to for census records, depending on how far you want to go) then that will cost as well.

There are lots of helpful people on the Genealogy board who will be able to help if you get stuck.

Brilliant. Thank you. I've wanted to do it for years but it has always seemed so daunting. But if I don't get a move on I'll not be able to pass it on to my DC.
