I think I’ve been pronouncing it wrong - not that it comes up that often but still.

Looey- vill??

Joshitai · 24/10/2022 22:18

Loo-ee-vill

Its a French place name.

Summerscorchio · 24/10/2022 22:19

Loo-ee-vil
But no idea if that's correct or not, I've only ever seen it written, not actually pronounced <helpful I know>

FreezyFreezy · 24/10/2022 22:20

Loo ville?

Sikaris · 24/10/2022 22:21

Lewis vil

But I might pronounce it wrong too.

murasaki · 24/10/2022 22:21

Loo - ee- ville

Latermumfairy · 24/10/2022 22:21

Lewis ville

Hallmark1234 · 24/10/2022 22:22

It's definitely Loo-ee-vill

Joshitai · 24/10/2022 22:22

I’ve been to the Louisville in Kentucky and heard the locals…so that’s what mine is based on.

Hallmark1234 · 24/10/2022 22:23

Louisville (/ˈluːivɪl/ (listen) LOO-ee-vil, US: /ˈluːɪvɪ

It's in Kentucky USA

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2022 22:25

I'd pronounce it Lou ee ville but I'd take a guess that in Kentucky they might sort of swallow the middle vowel

RewildingAmbridge · 24/10/2022 22:25

Loo ee vill
As in "I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights, slashed a hole in all 4 tyres, maybe next time he'll think before he cheats....."

ChapterNexf · 24/10/2022 22:25

Hmm just watching a YouTube video and apparently there’s quite a few ways different ways people say it - I’ve always said loo-ee-vill

The people who live in Louiseville Kentucky pronounce it more like Loor - ville. Weird I know. The people not from there or who don't know say Looey - Ville

MirandaWest · 24/10/2022 22:26

It’s Luuh-ville.

I was an au pair there for a year

Sort of like how a squirrel is a 'skwerl' ?

😂😂 I know where it is thanks, I’m just curious as I listened to a podcast and the person said people always come for them as they pronounce it wrong.

I had no idea it was pronounced any other way. Maybe it’s a local thing.

The arch there is an experience I do not ever want to repeat. Genuinely terrifying.

Why is it terrifying?

I was intrigued (maybe moreso because of the rude PPGrin) ... can't see what you're referring to, was it the arch in St Louis not Louisville maybe?

TheWindBeneathMyFlaps · 24/10/2022 23:14

The little cabins you go up in wobble alarmingly and you can see the inside of the arch as you ascend then the sway as you descend is really concerning. The arch itself sways when you’re at the top. It’s very high!

Whizzi24 · 24/10/2022 23:20

There was a film set there, can't remember it's name but I think it had Kirsten Dunst in it. The only thing I remember is that they pronounced the name really oddly, like
Loo-uh-ville.
