I want to get my dd a secondhand islabike or a frog. I can't get my head around what size isla I should get her. She will be 5 in late November and she is currently 107cm tall with an inside leg of 47cm. I don't want to get her a bike that she'll outgrow in a few months but at the same time I don't want to get her one that is too big for her. Ive checked the sizechart on islabike website, but i am still unsure. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am guessing its going to be either a Conc 16 , Conc 20 or a beinn 20s. But which of these should I be getting 🤔 😕

This will be her first bike, she has no previous bike/balance bike experience

I'd go cnoc 16. Can she already ride a pedal bike?
The cnoc 16 will prob only last her 12-18 months.
Our daughter was on the cnoc 14 from 3.5-5.
Moved to cnoc 16 at 5 and she has just turned 6. I think she'll need a 20" next spring.
I'm not sure her exact height but when she got the 16 for her 5th bday she was wearing age 5-6 clothes...

She's kind of in between sizes.. How comfortable is she on a bike? Her inseam is enough for a Beinn 20s or Cnoc 20, but the approximate minimum height is still lacking a little. If she's already a confident rider I'd probably pick either or anyway (the difference is mostly that the Beinn has gears while the Cnoc does not) but if she's just starting to learn maybe the Cnoc 16. She'll outgrow it soonish though, but Islabikes have excellent resale value.

(My 5-year-old rides the Beinn 20 but he's already 119 cm, although with a long back and a short inseam. He learnt on a Cnoc 16.)

Just seen your next message.
I think the 16. Take the pedals off so she can learn to use it like a balance bike first.
20 will feel huge- it's a big jump from the 16.

In this case Cnoc 16 all the way. Take the pedals off at first.

Not a beinn it has gears, too much for a first bike.
I have a 4 year old dd 104cm and just got her a conc 16 and it's good on the big side but not too big. Ds nearly 6 is still riding a conc 16 (could of moved up to the 20 but I've just got him back riding with peddles after a year refusing and didn't want to change bikes)

by the way I highly recommend not putting the peddles on and letting her use it as a balance bike first

DS had an inside leg measurement of 47cm when he turned 5. I got him a new bike and it was between a Frog 47 (no gears) or an Islabike Beinn 20 Small (which has gears). He could already ride a bike, though - he'd had a balance bike and then a lightweight 14" wheel bike. So gears would have been fine (although we went for the Frog 47 in the end). For your DD who hasn't learned to ride a bike yet, gears would be an unnecessary distraction.

So I'd suggest a Frog 47 or a Cnoc 20, I think.

Do you have anywhere nearby you can try them out? Look up Frog stockists. Islas come up a lot second hand so you could see if anyone near you is selling and would let you check it out.

Actually having read the replies, I agree that 20" wheels would be too much for a beginner.

Do check out the Frog 47. With 18" wheels it's a good option.

I'd agree to go for 16 not 20 for a child who's not confidently balancing already. DS1 had a 14 inch bike with stabilisers and once he outgrew it age 5, because he was tall and within the height range we went straight to Beinn 20 which was a mistake. He found learning to cycle hard and I think a smaller bike like the 16 would have helped. We bought one for DS2.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/10/2022 22:07

My elder DD had a Beinn 20L at 5yo (very long legs!), so got her sister a Beinn 20... and on reflection it was a mistake. By 6 it was fine. She outgrew it around 8.5.

The good thing if you are buying 2nd hand Islabikes 2nd hand value is constant (it has risen the same rate as new though... )

Thank you so much for your replies. They are very helpful indeed. I think i'll go for a conc 16 and I'll check out the frog 47 too. Thank you once again 💕
