Any Pharmacists about?

My young teenager was prescribed 40 tablets Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg this afternoon.

GP said she would need a 10 day course.

Leaflet says 1 or 2 tablets every 6 hours or as directed by GP. Pharmacy label says 2 tablets, 4 times a day. It therefore appears we only have a 5 day course.

Can any pharmacists shed any light on the usual dose and length of course please? I will of course call the surgery tomorrow when it reopens. Thanks.

What are they being treated for? Are they taking any other medication?

Pharangitis with spots oozing pus at back of throat. No other meds.

Thanks for response @AltitudeCheck

500mg four times a day is the correct dose for sore throat (including pharyngitis and tonsillitis) for 12 years upwards, including adults. There's a 2 page visual summary here with dose info on the second page;
www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng84

The guidelines say 5 - 10 days and as your GP told you 10 days it looks like they miscalculated the number of tablets needed.

I would take 500mg (2 x 250mg tablets) four times a day and call the surgery tomorrow to request a second prescription to cover days 6-10.
