Power cuts...

So planned power cuts, I read they're planning various cuts at different times for different power groups.
How is everyone planning for this (fingers crossed it won't happen but with 2 young kids, I'd rather be prepared)
Torches? Candles, hot water bottles etc?

What about the fridge.. How we we prevent food from spoiling, especially meat and milk etc. Power outages are said to be 3 hours, will food keep that long without power, or is it worth having blocks of frozen water to put in fridge to help keep cool?

Fire away with any and all suggestions of how to deal with the possible power cuts.

Yeah I'm not sure what my work will suggest TBH!
I know I'm on the priority list due to health issues and my medication needs the fridge as well

@Mummapenguin20 here you go. Scroll down to where it says Find your Operator, put your postcode in and it confirms details including your Zone.

I cant figure out my level 🙈

There should be a letter at the top of your elec bill (but might not be, in which case ask your provider)

Thanks guys I’m a s

I'm working on the assumption that as we are close to the border of Wales and England, the power will be on in one side of the border when it's off in the other. So hopefully I can't take the kids to my parents or PIL for tea and a warm and vice versa. Or we can go out for tea.

My biggest concern is that I WFH and will end up working stupid hours around when we actually have power.

I really hope it doesn't end up being too disruptive if it does happen. My folks are in the same 'block' as me, otherwise we may have hatched a plan. No good when we are both disconnected at the same time.

We were without power for 4 days because of Storm Arwen, but we have a small generator which kept the freezers going and meant we could use the internet. We cooked on top of the woodburner and used camping gas lights and candles. Rural here, so it's not unusual to have power cuts in stormy weather, so we are pretty much prepared all year round.

That's not your block number. Mines says S too, so it seems funny we are all S in that case.

When I put my postcode in here, it comes out as Block B for the purpose of the outages.

Oh that’s interesting!
I looked at my bill after reading this from your Edinburgh link.
(postcode thing says C)

At least I thought it was your link - can’t find it now!

Yeah I did the same. I wasn't fully happy that it was what I was looking for (albeit it is in a box) so I dug a bit more. It'sbloody confusing though.

Here's mine from my bill now I need to know what the bloody S does actually stand for

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 25/10/2022 15:37

Yep my bill has S in a box too then further down it says my alpha code is B, which matches up to what powercut105 says it is.

I want to know what S means!

I'm B too so assume we are in the same area.

Think this answers the S thing

The milk needs to come out of the fridge before the powercut and the butter will be on the side anyway.
Torches and candles. Leisure batteries for potentially running other stuff like a TV. Camping stove and kettle already here.

Oh thanks, that makes sense, as it’s with the meter number!
Will reread bill now looking for alpha 🤔

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 25/10/2022 15:57

@RainbowZebraWarrior ah that makes sense!

MissPinkCakeyBun · 25/10/2022 16:02

I've just looked up my DD and if this is correct she's hammered in group P
Thursday 03:30-06:30
Friday 12:30-15:30
Sunday 12:30-15:30
Sunday 18:30-21:30

Ilovetocrochet · 25/10/2022 21:27

I’m in block P as well!

Snowdropsarelovely · 30/10/2022 21:04

Would schools be included in planned power cuts?

Yes they will along with any other business that is not critical, eg hospitals. I'm not even sure nursing homes are going to be protected.

MintJulia · 18/11/2022 11:40

We had our first power cut last night. More flooding in the substation that lack of supply, but a good test. Our battery lantern worked and lasted the full three hours, ds calmly switched to reading a book without grumbling and I finally went to bed early because there was nothing else I could do.

Actually feeling more positive although maybe this is novelty value. Having 10 hours straight sleep feels great 😁 Could be worse !
