What's going on with cheese?

So sorry, to ask such a dull question but I can't take it anymore. Why is all cheddar suddenly disgusting slimy blocks of plastic cheese? OK I'm not talking M&S but Sainsburys, Aldi and Lidl "extra mature" is all disgusting.
I've spent about 3/4 quid on a block and it's too foul to eat. It's not off or mouldy its just non tasting rubber.
Can anyone explain why this is? Shortage of something ?

Can’t explain but share your pain. Same with ham, even the posh stuff is slimy and salty. Yikes!

hamstersarse · 23/10/2022 22:31

Cheese has gone downhill since they started using pasteurised milk

If you find a cheese that warns you it’s made with raw milk…..that’s the one to buy!

Dont worry, it won’t kill you

Moonwalkingagain · 23/10/2022 22:32

And cheese no longer goes golden when toasted or grated on top of a baked dish. It just remains a pale solid lump. What is that all about?

I have been saying this too. When you grill it the bottom of the grill pan has oil in it, not lumps of melted cheese. Its vile and I want the real stuff back!

Brownsauce83 · 23/10/2022 22:35

I’ve noticed the same! Branded or own-brand, unless you buy the fancier stuff it’s changed to bland and rubbery.

hassletassle · 23/10/2022 22:35

Following for tips! My 4yo refused to eat her cheese earlier , it was just medium cheddar ... and when I tasted it it was waxy and vile. Maybe I need to veer away from cheddar (though it's normally the only kind my kids will eat)!

EVHead · 23/10/2022 22:36

I thought it was just me! Cheddar is so tasteless and doesn’t melt on my baked potatoes. 😡

hassletassle · 23/10/2022 22:36

What sort of posh cheese are we needing to buy now to avoid the waxiness?

rainstorm101 · 23/10/2022 22:37

Yes! I noticed this recently having some cheddar on a cottage pie - waxy and oily not bubbly and golden!

If anyone knows the reason will they come and explain it?!

Soproudoflionesses · 23/10/2022 22:37

I bought some extra mature Cheddar yesterday and l have to agree - it just tastes soapy and waxy. Yuk!

GCAcademic · 23/10/2022 22:38

I haven’t eaten cheese for a while but the descriptions above sound exactly like what has happened to chocolate. Though that’s down to palm oil which I assume can’t be the case with cheese.

EmmaH2022 · 23/10/2022 22:38

Oh I thought this too.

what should I buy?

Babyroobs · 23/10/2022 22:39

Thought it was Liz truss posting for a minute talking about cheese "that is disgusting".

Gobolino80 · 23/10/2022 22:39

Ocado extra mature cheddar is bloody brilliant. Really tasty and not at all plasticky

JustOrderADoor · 23/10/2022 22:40

I thought it was just me. I've bought Cathedral for years, but started to find it tasteless and it wasn't melting and going melt golden brown. I've tried Pilgrims, it's no better. I like Coastal from Costco, but it's not as convenient.

what legislation has ruined cheese????

CheesyBeans1 · 23/10/2022 22:40

Not just cheese. Where is the earl grey in earl grey bags ? And the salt in almost everything? Who is stealing all the flavour?

CheesyBeans1 · 23/10/2022 22:41

Davidstow is still delicious. Or it was last week! @

leccybill · 23/10/2022 22:45

And it's just slimy cheddar cheddar cheddar everywhere now. Where are all the nice continental cheeses? Or even nice UK variations?!

kateandme · 23/10/2022 22:45

Is this the same for Lidl.one in purple packets? We have that one and the really basic one and it’s ok.but maybe it hasn’t got to our parts yet? As a cheese family this won’t go down well!
it’s costly so we don’t buy it anymore but wyke farm cheese, again purple packet was always a success for us?anyone had that recently?

kateandme · 23/10/2022 22:46

My family work for wyke farm and godminster cheeses.should I ask?

Yes definitely!

I love godminster cheese btw!!! The BEST cheddar. I buy it and the smoked godminster every Christmas. Sadly too expensive for us to buy all the time. :-(

But if you can find out what's happened to standard cheddar that would be great!

Yes please! Aldi cheese used to be great, then went crappy. Tried it again a while back and it was great again, but the last block was so rubbery it was vile.

Pixiedust1234 · 23/10/2022 22:52

Sadly the Red Leicester gone the same way. Doesnt matter if we buy from sainsburys or asda or aldi 😥
